My guess is that it's OOP because these Archive releases are limited runs of pressed discs, and this is a huge film. I'll be surprised if they don't print another run but it would seem more efficient for them to give it a non-Archive-sized one.

FYI. Warner Archives has a sale today. $10 off $35 or more.....of course all the WA blu-rays, including Out Of The Past, are on sale to for $17.19, which means you need to pick up more than 2 of them for the discount.

I was surprised to see this as a standalone....I thought Warner might do the (film noir) box set thing first before doing individual noir releases.

I think it makes sense for them to do a big title as a stand-alone first. If they did the whole box set, people would be turned off by the high cost, and that wouldn't be a fair way to gauge interest. If this sells well, though, certainly it could bode well for the box.

It may be that MMM is never technically wrong (though I don't know if that is the case), but there have been many instances where a title he listed as OOP never disappeared from major etailers' shelves, either not going OOP or just seamlessly changing UPCs.

A few Blu examples: The Road Warrior, The Getaway (1975), Some Like It Hot, All About Eve. Also many recent Sony Blu titles that were part of that big OOP announcement last summer are still available.

I worked in a Barnes and Noble years ago, and the way Archive discs worked was that you'd place an order (in store or online) and then B&N would literally place the burn-on-demand order to WA themselves, on a case by case basis. This may work differently with a release as popular as Out of the Past, but it's pretty much safe to assume that if B&N are shipping discs, WA are still printing them as usual.

I suspect this is true for most, if not all etailers, at least with actual MOD discs.

BN had it in stock already. It proves nothing other that a retailer had an item for sale. OOP titles are frequently available for some time after going out of print. It literally just went out of print days ago

Proof of a small community...Warner Archive made fun of the intern comment on their twitter feed.

Also, Amazon has Out of the Past back in stock, although the price is lousy.

Nanook of the North (Criterion) - Upgrade must be coming soon.

Just about everything released by Kimstim went out of print this week. They've been bought by a company called Icarus films. I assume most of these titles will get reissues soon.

There's an upgrade already - but not from Criterion. (I can't see them competing with their own edition - I think Film Preservation Associates owns the restoration.)

This is still listed as in print at Criterion's website, where did you see it's going out of print?

I just noticed that the Image Blu-ray of the Frank Sinatra film Suddenly has apparently gone OOP. This release is worth picking up for the bonus film alone, Francis Thompson's N.Y., N.Y.

The Weinstein Company officially discontinues El Cid and Fall of the Roman Empire this week. I think it's pretty safe to speculate they let the rights lapse to the Bronston library. Criterion released El Cid on laserdisc; wouldn't be surprised if they picked these up. Weinstein never did bother to get Circus World or 55 Days at Peking out on dvd.
