I've read Forever War, and it is magnificent - one of the key SF novels of the 70s. It's a direct riposte to books such as Starship Troopers which glorify war. It'll be interesting to see how it's tackled - my biggest fear is that it will be reduced to a series of spectacular combat sequences and leave out the 'dull' bits inbetween.
One thing that will probably change is the name given to the aliens - Buggers.
Oh, and there is a sequel - Forever Free - but that is very strange and not in the same league. I really can't see that one being filmed if the first one is a big hit.

I really can't wait for one of these big budget 3D films to bomb at the box office so this irritating trend can come to an end.

Absolutely. As with any sequel that's not being done by the same director, Jim's film removed a lot of tense subtleties that were important in the first one, and replaced them with what would now be seen 80's action-film cliches. But this is a special case since
Aliens itself created a sub-genre, which is part of why I find it so admirable. From what I've gathered in some interviews with Ridley, he himself is an admirer of what James did. One of the greatest development tragedies that I can think of is that
Alien 5 with Ridley and Sigourney attached, and James on as a writer, that all disintegrated when Fox green-lit
AVP.

One should also keep in mind that Aliens was released seven years after Alien, so there is necessarily going to be less of a chance that one is going to feel that emphasis or attention is being taken away from one's own work by the other. Other projects had intervened for Scott, so there'd be less reason to become possessive--plus, as has been said, Aliens is so different a film that Scott had less reason to feel his work was being impinged on.

Ugh. I love Cronenberg but Eastern Promises was excruciatingly dull outside of Viggo's performance/penis.

I love Eastern promises. =D> It's considered a modern classic, here in Spain it was voted best film 2 years ago by critics.
What about PERIOD films?

When I first heard about the premise for Eastern Promises - how it was going to tackle the sex slave trade in eastern Europe, I was very interested to see what Cronenberg would reveal to us. Instead, he showed some idiotic mobster's son trapped in the closet. And the worst performance/character writing I've seen for Naomi Watts. So, maybe the sequel will greatly expand that universe... or not. But my hopes are always high with Cronenberg.

Sorry, when I asked about period films, I wanted to mean if the crises have stopped period films in UK and Hollywood, or are they working in new p.films? Not Sherlock Holmes, that yes is period, I mean like The duchess or the Queen Victoria biopic that I expect it'll be good, not like The duchess was.
By the way, Julio Medem has filmed is last movie, his first English-speakin film in Rome, with Elena Anaya naked as a lesbian. It's a remake from a Chilean film named En la cama (In the bed). But I don't know when it's released in Spain.

Cobalt 60 (Zack Snyder, 2011)

What the hell? Has anyone here heard this? Apparently Snyder is going to do a film adaptation of Vaughn Bode's Cobalt 60 comic strip. It seems that the primary source for this was/is Aintitcool news (and sites that read aintitcool) so Im inclined to take it with a large chunk of salt.

I wouldn't say April Fools just yet.
It actually isn't the first time this was mentioned with him attached. I actually think he was eyeing an adaptation before even 300 was released.

Zack Snyder's next confirmed film is Sucker Punch and it's some kind of pseudo-Alice In Wonderland with babes and guns thing. It's currently casting right now.

Toronto Star article about Cronenberg's receiving the Légion d'Honneur today, which notes that he's currently hard at work on
The Matarese Circle script as well as that the
Eastern Promises sequel is indeed in the works.

So Snyder is taking a crack @ Alice as well as Marilyn Manson
and Tim Burton!

MIIB was atrocious, and with Smith's star seemingly never stopping its ascension (he was even able to make something like Seven Pounds highly profitable) Sony probably know that they don't need to try in the slightest for this one to be enormous.
For now, safely in the 'ignore' list. Of course, I rarely see any summer blockbusters anyway, so what does it matter to Sony?
