Double Indemnity (Billy Wilder, 1944)

Universal will release this classic in Britain on March 14, according to amazon.uk
This may imply that there was(is) a rights problem connected to its sudden removal from Universal's US release schedule last year. Just hope that the transfer is superior to that of the appalling Image disc; it has to be.

The Lost Weekend for that date.

That is certainly one of Universal's best covers. I hope it is kept for the R1 release ...

Unfortunately, the R1 US disc has been officially "closed out of town" according to the March edition of
The DVD Laserdisc Newsletter. I assume this means no release in the foreseeable future.

Anyone else worried about this, given the history of the US version?
MrN - I, too, fear it's a case of history repeating.

Oddly enough, Play.com also has a modified release date, but theirs is June 27th. It seems no-one is quite certain when this is going to emerge - but I take the existence of the cover art as assurance that it will.

Well now it looks to be heading out to sales at last. Overpriced and stick-thin R2 with so-so tech profile.... ewww smell my non-buy.

DVD review, with a few comparisons shots of the R1. It looks a little DVNR'd. But nothing major. Good transfer. It still deserves a few quality extras, though.

Finally. But this is Universal, so I'll believe it when i have it in my hands. And hopefully they don't screw up anything.

Well glory be! Though--knowing Universal--the "Special Edition" may just be two DVD-18s crammed with a half-dozen un-restored, marginally related films. This announcement also gives hope that a stand-alone release of Hawks' Scarface may hit the shelves before I reach retirement age.

Not to change the subject, but I am a big fan of Universals DVD-18 releases. I think the image, always looks quite lovely considering how old and obscure many of the films are. I also love how compact the sets are, I wish more 6 film sets could fit in a single size case. And the price point is fantastic, compared to say Fox's upcoming sets.
Bring on Double Indemnity!

Great news.
Given the way Universal operates, I'd be surprised if their first DVD release of anything is a 2 DVD special edition. I'd expect that to come along next year or the year after when many people have already bought the first release. If I'm wrong about this then perhaps there will be some decent special features.
And if they are doing 2 x DVD-18 set to release more titles in the Universal Noir Collection they initiated 2 years ago (and haven't added anything to since) that's certainly OK with me.

Lots of
technical issues though.

Unrestored? Universal's releases of their vintage back catalogue have been uniformly gorgeous over the past couple of years.

I suppose so. I'm thrilled that I can finally retire my dreadful Image disc, but I had convinced myself that the boys at Criterion had finally managed to get their grubby little fingers on it. I'm dumbfounded that Universal is releasing a two-disc set though. I didn't think that they put less than seventeen films per disc these days.
