Awards Season 2011

And the Oscars get even more ridiculous: Best Picture noms must receive at least 5% of the first place votes to qualify for Best Pic nom, meaning the number of nominees could be anywhere between five and ten. It's like they are daring people to not take these awards seriously.

I was hoping no one would post this and we could just pretend it isn't happening

I calculate this actually makes the Oscars 3% less ridiculous.

Hack director Brett Ratner
out as Oscars producer after a very douchey week in which he insulted homosexuals, Olivia Munn and Lindsey Lohan while promoting his film Tower Heist. I don't get why this idiot was chosen in the first place.

His phone interview on The Howard Stern Show yesterday was unbearable. Stern was audibly grossed out by Ratner - as he described that he doesn't like to have sex with condoms, so he makes women he has sex with go to his doctor before he'll touch them ("It has to be my doctor - I don't know if she's blowing her doctor for good test results!") and proclaimed himself the best cunnilingus "artist" in the world. Oh, and he said that his doctor told him that he has "ten times the normal sperm of an average man, and the most he's ever seen in a sample in his career." Without irony or an ounce of intended humor. Form a line, ladies. Single file.

Ironic that the rest of his output is so average.

Just idiotic decision on Murphy's part. He could have done something that would have re-started his career, yet he sides with the oversexed buffoon. Hopefully the new producers bring someone like Billy Crystal again.

He can do better than host award shows to re-re-start his career again, frankly. With or without Ratner, I could see his performance as host falling pretty flat.

With Ratner producing, he would have had his ego stroked and all of his whims catered to. No guarantee of that with any other producer, and I'm sure many producers would turn down the job if they had to be stuck with Murphy as host. Or they could accept and--inadvertently or on purpose--make Murphy look like an idiot. Nope, better to get out now and not have your career "re-started" than to stay in and have it finished for good.

I dunno, he might have made a good host-- I remember seeing clips from when Murphy hosted the MTV awards and did some pretty great "Fuck y'all" things, like going into the bathroom in the middle of the show and taking the cameras with him. The Oscars could use that kind of looseness, really

Colin Quinn had a few good tweets about possibly hosting
"Hey, I see Jack Nicholson over there. Hey, Jack do you go to Lakers games to fill some void? Check out a museum once in a while, stupid."

They'll probably just get Billy Crystal to show up and do his best kiss-everyone's-ass-like-Bob-would've routine. "Clint . . . you're so old and gruff!" "Brad and Angie . . . you're in the media all of the time and have a lot of kids!" "Jack . . . you're so Jack!"

Ditto. Even though he is a "safe" pick, Crystal is definitely an upgrade over Franco and Hathaway and probably even Murphy. Just like domino mentioned above, Eddie would have been something different if (a big if) he did something out of the box like when he hosted the MTV awards back in the 80's. Sadly, that Eddie Murphy is gone. I doubt that with or without Rattner he would have done something that brought his old school style back. Murphy certainly has lost his edge, the thing he had about being unpredictable.
