Well this news certainly compensates for stepping in dogshit on my walk home.

Concerning truly great shows, I just watched the second season of Arrested Development on dvd. It truly is one of the best comedy series of all-time, right up there with the Monty Pythons and other classics. The writing is just unbelievably strong and the cast is amazing. It's like it's on a totally different level from anything else in the entire comedy genre. I'd say it's easily just as good as The Office. even though I absolutely adore that series too (I'm really hoping Ricky Gervais finally ends up doing a guest bit on Arrested Development sometime on season 3, he's been promising that for awhile).

I really hope Showtime or some other channel picks up the series, as it is simply one of the finest shows in the history of television. And I urge everyone who hasn't seen it yet to go out and buy both of the seasons on dvd, it really is that good. Don't just take my word for it, see what the 'Parent's Television Council Publications' has to say about Arrested Development:

Arrested Development is the story of the Bluth family. The show picks up when George Sr. is arrested for securities fraud and his son Michael is left to pick up the pieces of the family and their business.

Arrested Development is designed to offend. Episodes regularly contain scripted bleeps. This enables the writers to use language, including "f**k" and "s**t," network censors would never allow. Arrested Development also employs some of the most outrageous double-entendres ever to find their way into prime-time. In one episode, for example, Tobias says he was an analyst and a therapist, making him the first "analrapist." Other episodes have delved into the bizarre sexual proclivities of the main characters, such as Lucille's revelation that she and George derive sexual pleasure from being strangled with a belt.

Also, I loved what David Cross says about the lack of success of Arrested Development (warning: Foul language, if that bothers you).

Cross is so right, Fox (specifically marketing) hasn't got a clue.

And you know what else kills me about Fox's marketing? The show had Charlize Theron show up as a recurring character. Not just one episode, a whole bunch of episodes (and she was rather funny, too) Charlize Theron! And not once did Fox even market that! I know she's not the biggest name, but she's known, she's won awards, she had a big movie coming out (true, it was Aeon Flux, but still), and there's a lot of guys out there (including me) who would love to (in the words of George Bluth, Sr.) "stick it to her" and they didn't even try to capitalize on any of that. Good job Fox marketing guys. I gotta get a job there because it's obvious you don't have to do shit to keep your job.

When NBC screwed Freaks & Geeks they were paid back with the XFL, so let's hope Fox faces a similar fate (he types secretly wishing for an O'Reilly/Hannity love tryst).

... except endlessly promote Prison Break and its annoying encore episodes.

I understand those words separately, but they make no sense together.

Bet it gets canceled after three episodes.

Part of me is excited, part of me wishes they'd just let it go already, and the remaining part just wants to have been at the table when Hurwitz presumably got the Fox suits to promise not to cancel the show partway through the new episodes.

Hopefully the episodes, if they're supposed to be centering around particular characters, will still feature others and retain the kinetic energy of the rest of the series.

God, why can't this happen with Party Down

Jason Bateman confirmed that they are doing 10 episodes and then the movie!

Deadline is reporting that Showtime is in negotiations to air the new episodes, so it seems like they won't have to deal with FOX and they'll probably get more creative freedom than they would if this was a project for network television. I'm certainly interested....but let's hope that Mitch is going to bring more to the table than say the first (and last) season of Running Wilde.

Netflix does ultimate damage control, picks up the new season of Arrested Development-- guess this really is happening (it's also the top story on Huff Post, which is pissing off a lot of old fogeys in the comments)

New episodes start filming in four weeks. \:D/
