This inspired me to see if Breathless was referenced in any of the Film Socialisme trailers. But it doesn't look like it was.

But Hiroshima mon amour and Last Year at Marienbad were both referenced in the US trailer for Wild Grass!

Surprised there wasn't a thread for this already, considering it opened in the UK and Ireland last month. Over here, it just opened last week, and as they've kept the NC-17 it got slapped with here, chances are it won't be playing at a theater near you if you live there. I've made a last minute adjustment to a trip I'm taking to NYC to fit in a showing of the film when I saw it's playing at AMC in Lincoln Square.

Most independent theaters will show NC-17, as will Landmark theaters. It will be playing in most major U.S. cities. Here is a list of playdates and theaters.

Good interview with Gina Gershon on the AV Club today. She is the greatest.

We had the chance to see an early screening of this, and.... well, I enjoyed the hell out of it. There were many moments where I just had to marvel in awe over the sheer brazenness of the sleaze. Perhaps those who gorged on the Noir project would point out an example that tops this, but I've never seen a blacker, more gleefully sadistic film noir. It goes without saying that this will not be for everyone; in fact I'm now perversely looking forward to hearing others' reactions to it.

Matthew McConaughey is on an excellent roll this year between this, Magic Mike and Bernie. Scott Tobias of the AV Club has dubbed him as this generation’s Robert Mitchum, and after seeing his performance in Killer Joe I have to put some stock in that assessment. Everyone is fantastic (save Emile Hirsch, but I'd chalk that up more to slight unevenness in the writing than his acting) but McConaughey takes the fuckin' cake and shoves it down your throat.

She is. A shame about the merkin (it was pretty obvious, though); she was fantastic in the film. As was everyone else, save Emile Hirsch, who began to become annoying in the last third of the film. Having not seen Magic Mike, I was shocked by how much I enjoyed Matthew McConaughey in this, as well. It does plod along a bit in the middle, but the final twenty minutes, when Friedkin ratchets up the crazy, is well worth the wait.

The comments she has in the interview imply that she was looking for a bit more, ahem, naturel than her body is prepared to deliver, for character reasons.

I don't quite know what is going on in this series of posts, but all I meant to say was that I think Gina Gershon is attractive, especially for her age, and that I wished I could have seen more of her rather than a merkin (and yes, I read in the article where she felt her pubic hair wasn't substantial enough to convey the appropriate white-trash imagery the film called for). I'm not sure how the post from mfunk9786 about her being 50 is "offenesive" to triodelover, or how the hell Juliette Binoche got involved in this discussion...

And while we're on the topic of merkins, that's not really "nudity" in my book, anyway. I mean, if a guy had a comically large merkin covering all his anatomy, it would be PG-13 material.

The post is sexist because you never hear a comment like that about a 50-year-old man. I didn't hear anyone say how remarkably good looking George Clooney was for a 50-year-old man last year. In fact, the only time I can recall any comment about a man's appearance and his age was when Paul Newman turned 70 - and that comment was made by Robert Redford out of envy.

It's also ageist because the post conveys a certain amazement that 50 can be attractive and if 50 is attractive, it certainly isn't as attractive as, well, any younger age of your choice and therefore must but judged by different standards, sort of like the Paralympics. It comes across as the kind of statement you might expect from a particularly clueless sophomore in high school. (And discussion about her pubic hair cements the location as your favorite high school locker room at gym class.)

Considering the usual high intellectual level of discussion on this forum - I'll turn 64 next month (just another reason the comment offends) and I never fail to learn something worthwhile when I read here - all in all it's a pretty damn disappointing exchange.

That's a disappointingly closed-minded view for someone of your age. I can only hope that by the time I reach your age (which is not so far off), I don't have a similar opinion. I apologize for any offense I may have have caused to you.

Completely off-topic to the film and Gershon herself, but you know who's almost 60? Anna Levine, best known as the prostitute Eastwood & co. are hired to avenge in Unforgiven.

She was in her forties when that was made? Would have never guessed that.

Late 30's, but still impressive as she doesn't look any older than 25. Par for the course probably since most everyone else on screen is much older. She also played the girl in the bar with Christian Slater in the opening scene of True Romance and a junkie in The Crow.

For the record, I've made ample mention of how insanely hot Burt Lancaster is at 55 in The Swimmer. Also: Eastwood creaming The Swede in Heartbreak Ridge. Talk about sploosh.
