His going to shoot his next film this summer, it will be a screwball comedy, set into a plane, with a problem.
Probably again with Banderas and Penélope. Release spring 2013
Name: Los amantes pasajeros, "The travelers lovers"

Teaser trailer and some news about Los amantes pasajeros.
It looks like the effects of Ozpetek's Mine Vaganti.

Should probably make this its own thread.
I'm surprised to see a trailer so soon, since the US release figures to be almost a year away. Looks more broadly comical than anything he's done in a long time, since, what?
Women on the Verge? Hard to tell from a short teaser, though.

What other major, big fucking deal director rolls out a teaser like that?! Awesome. Can you imagine if PTA's next film was announced with that teaser? Couldn't be more excited to learn more about this one.

That first one is the least interesting Almodóvar poster since ... who even knows. Long time.
EDIT: Is it even a real poster? His films have been credited as "un film de Almodóvar" for ages, not "una pelicula de Pedro Almodóvar"

So, umm... which Almodovar should I see first?

It depends on what face of him you are interested in. Though it is not my favorite of his films Talk to Her might be the best place to start. All About My Mother is probably also a great place to start and is one of his best.

In my experience, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown always plays well for first-timers (and seems appropriate if you're interested in the comedic vibe I'm So Excited appears to be going for). Though as knives said, depends on what you are looking for in his work.

I don't know if it really matters where you start. I've seen a dozen or so of his films, and I think they're all pretty accessible to a first-timer, as far as it goes.
Some of them come with non-Almodóvar prerequisites, though, such as the recent The Skin I Live In, which doesn't entirely depend on you having seen Eyes Without a Face but is enhanced if you have done so.

I thought Bad Education was a good starting point insofar as if you're cool with that, you'll more or less be cool with anything Almodovar does

It's such a personal, strange film though that much like The Skin I Live In it seems to be the last place one should start.

I took a friend to see The Skin I Live In as his first Almodovar film and, while he liked it and is not shy from such wild material as that, it hasn't encouraged him to explore further. It may play differently for others, but I'd think something more middle of the road to get a first time viewer's feet wet might be more appropriate and less intimidating (I'd have screened something like Talk to Her had I known beforehand). First impressions are so crucial. I'm still kicking myself for the several years I passed up Ingmar Bergman's work because I made the mistake of choosing Cries and Whispers as my intro to his filmography instead of building up to a title like that.

Though I think the Skin I Live In is his masterpiece, Bad Education was the first title I thought of as well. Talk to Her was my first Almodovar and I was indifferent to it and had no interest in continuing through his oeuvre were it not for friends and colleagues convincing me otherwise-- over a dozen films later, I'm now more sympathetic! Maybe he's just an auteur who needs a couple films under the belt to hone in on the wavelength?

Really BAD.
Poor film, not funny, unnecessary musical numero, stupid jokes about cocks, oral sex, etc. Jokes and obsession could be funny for 9 years old people. Not sophisticated, really tacky. Chavy.
He tries to make another screwball comedy but all is screwed. And everyone screws.
And it's not the metaphor of Spanish society as He is trying to sell the picture. Yes, there's a corrupt banker, a King's whore, but... what ?
Miguel Angel Silvestre is the most handsome Spaniard ... ever.
The film has receipt the worst reviews in P.A's career.

For all the Emperor's Clothes bores spazzing abt Only God Forgives, here's a genuinely successful empty exercise in color and form, whose icing on the cake is hilarity and energy and Shakespearean comedy of manners storylines weaving together. Almodovar's best (while blatantly lightweight yet agile as fuck) since Talk to Her.
