Blancanieves

It's probably that tomorrow it will win lots of Goya Awards.

Black and White, silent, with Maribel VerdĂș (Pan's labyrinth, Tetro) as the Stepmother.

US release in March.

Cohen Media in the U.S.. Yes, they are acquiring and distributing new theatrical releases in addition to the classic home video library they purchased. They had The Other Son out last year, and have at several films scheduled for 2013, including this and François Ozon's In the House.

Wonder if Cohen Media only distributes DCP or 35mm as well.

I have just heard on tv minutes ago when Blancanieves won Best Cinematography award (it's winning most all) that it was filmed with two 16 mm cameras.

Berger, his surname is pronounced in a strange Catalan- Spanish way, not like in German or English is very good looking. :-"

That Cohen Media is also going to put on American market the loser tonight, a French language film directed by Oscar winner Fernando Trueba (Belle Epoque, Chico y Rita), with a famous come back, Claudia Cardinale.

I've just watched the Spanish dvd of this (which has English subs, but they are in yellow, so a warning should be in order), and I'm amazed. A fantastic, poetical, visually striking film which doesn't look back to the silent films of the 20s in a nostalgic way, even though perhaps there are some references to Browning's "Freaks", but it really transports the art of the silent film to the 21st century. In this respect, you get everything that makes many of the old silent films so wonderful: a story told by the visuals and facial expressions alone (the intertitles are few and could probably even be more reduced without any loss of understanding), virtuoso camerawork, brilliant acting.

The modernisation of the Snow White story works perfectly but retains its fairy-tale quality; there's also a hint at another Grimm tale, "The Sleeping Beauty", at the end. At the same time of course it evokes the similar fairy-tale/mythical character that bullfighting has attained over the years and by its cinematic representations. In any case, a gorgeous film with a wonderful soundtrack and images that will resonate a long time after viewing. CC should really get this; finally a contemporary film that would really deserve to be in the collection with lots of extras added (but they better don't dare fiddling with it with their blackness boosting... the Spanish disc looks great). What a beautiful film... I love it when silent films get five oscars these days, but it should have really been this one.

Blancanieves is just amazing. Probably the best film I watched last year.

I've read that Americans are complaining about the high prices in the Cohen collection.

The Spanish blu ray is region free and cheaper. There is English sub for the film but I don't know if there are for extras too. 9 euros version

There's a de luxe version at 15 euros

And unlike the US release, it also has the original intertitles. Definitely the version to choose.

Wonderful tip, Rohmerin. Until now, I've been so irritated that Studiocanal chose not to release the film on blu-ray in the UK.
