Uh-oh, Criterion is messing with their website layout and it isn't too pretty.
In positive news, we can now sort by country and director.

That's not new...one could always sort like that.

True, but now we can see how they rank.. like the top five director's represented:
Akira Kurosawa - 35
Ingmar Bergman - 26
Yasujiro Ozu - 22
Louis Malle - 16
James Ivory - 13
Although I thought this odd:
Charles Chaplin - 1
Charlie Chapin - 1

What's more odd, they have "Robert Rossen - 0" listed too. And his
Alexander the Great is listed on some of the
"explore people" pages, though a page for the film doesn't exist. Maybe it'll appear in a future Eclipse set? Wonder if there's any other oddities in there.

I love Rossen (almost wrote my thesis on him), but that's one of his weakest films, one that's only interesting from the auteur standpoint, and even then tough to sit through

Costa-Gavras is weirdly broken into two different people, too. I'm guessing they haven't quite ironed the bugs out.

Specifically, I'm guessing that
director is a column in their catalog table, and not a foreign key reference to a
directors table.

Thought I'd mention this here, it appears that pages are up for Ken Russell and Jacques Rivette, with no films listed yet. Could this mean respective films by them will be joining the collection this month?

Edit: Had to make URLs clickable. Still kind of new here, sorry for the mishap.

That's an interesting find. I assume that you're probably on to something here.
Edit: Never mind

Sad thought, but wondered if the 'long delayed' title could be a Rivette in a 'French New Wave' eclipse..

Interesting find, though it would appear that Criterion has blank pages like that for all sorts of random directors, including Mike Nichols, Sadao Yamanaka, Giuseppe De Santis, Edward Dmytryk, Lucrecia Martel, Leni Riefenstahl, etc.

These directors -- and more -- will all be a part of the thirty-disc Eclipse Series 37: Cleaning Out Our Basement

I'm starting to get the feeling that these pages are more or less placeholders for titles Criterion has the rights to and is planning to release in the near future and that it doesn't necessairly mean we will be getting these titles this month. Still, they are interesting finds, and in a sense, a confirmation for some titles that they will be joining the collection eventually.

We're obviously not getting them all this month but it does more or less confirm what they're planning to release in the next 6 months or so.

It confirms that someone at Criterion has heard of these directors. That's about it.

I think it confirms a bit more than that. We know that titles from these directors are coming (not this month, though).

Yeah, more like a 'we have rights to some film by this director and could release release it in the next twenty years if we feel like it'. I found Diane Kurys, Claude Autant-Lara, Emir Kusturica, Jean Delannoy and Koji Shima ...none of which are likely to be out soon.

There are clearly dozens, maybe even hundreds, of these pages set up on Criterion's site. Even if they all signify a future release, it would take years for Criterion to get through them all.

Paul Thomas Anderson (
Punch-Drunk Love and (?)
Hard Eight)
Peter Greenaway (
Drowning by Numbers (through Film4) and/or
Belly of an Architect (MGM))
Michel Gondry (Does New Line own
Human Nature outright?)
Kiyoshi Kurosawa (
Cure)
Russy Meyer (There was some speculation a while back that Fox may have finally relinquished
Beyond the Valley of the Dolls)
Thomas Vinterberg(
Festen, probably)
Frantisek Vlácil (
Marketa Lazarova)
