They are indeed - I wrote the blurb a fortnight ago (which I see they sent to Amazon). Though my version had apostrophes, which they seem to have stripped out.

More comapnies striving to create definitive editions is never a bad thing. Let's hope these two are good also.

Which Die Blechtrommel are they releasing though? The classic cut or the newer director's cut?

Literally all the info I have (including the answer to your question) is available via that Amazon link.

Bah, apologies. With the blue writing on a blue background I didn't notice a link when skimming. Thanks. The release looks great!

I don't know how Amazon can manage to keep the umlaut in Schlöndorff but lose all the apostrophes, but that's Amazon for you.

To clarify here are the details on The Tin Drum:

Special Features:
- High Definition and Standard Definition presentation of the original theatrical version
- High Definition presentation of the Director s Cut [Blu-ray only]
- New restoration of both the theatrical version and the brand new Director s Cut approved by director Volker Schlöndorff
- Brand new interview with Volker Schlöndorff
- Comprehensive booklet featuring brand new writing on the film by George Lellis and Hans-Bernhard Moeller, authors of Volker Schlondorff's Cinema: Adaptation, Politics and the Movie-appropriate, as well as extracts from Volker Schlöndorff s diary, writing by Jean Claude Carrière and Günter Grass, illustrated with archival stills.
- More extras to be announced!

We're hoping to be able to announce more very soon but I don't want to confirm anything if it's not set in stone, which is why the details on The Conformist are absent, as soon as we have everything in the can on that we'll be announcing the specs, which shouldn't be too long now.

I thought this was actually a misprint on the documentation I received, where it says it's region free, but the disc I have is region locked to B. Granted, it's a test disc.

Hmm - I wonder if this is a Winstanley situation where the checkdiscs are region-locked but the final product is region-free?

My only worry is that if you cram two versions on one blu-ray,the bitrate will be too low therefore making the PQ suffer.

Winner of the Cannes Palme d’Or and the Best Foreign Film Oscar, and adapted from one of the major works of postwar German literature (whose author later won the Nobel Prize), few films have such a powerhouse artistic pedigree.

When Oskar Matzerath (the extraordinary David Bennent, just twelve at the time) receives a tin drum for his third birthday, he vows to stop growing there and then – and woe betide anyone who tries to take his beloved drum away from him, as he has a banshee shriek that can shatter glass. As a result, he retains a permanent child’s-eye perspective on the rise of Nazism as experienced through petit-bourgeois life in his native Danzig, the ‘free city’ claimed by both Germany and Poland whose invasion in 1939 helped kick-start World War II. With the help of Luis Buñuel’s favourite screenwriter Jean-Claude Carrière, director Volker Schlöndorff turns Günter Grass’s magical-realist masterpiece into a carnivalesque frenzy of bizarre, grotesque yet unnervingly compelling images as Oskar turns his increasingly jaded eye and caustic tongue on the insane follies of the adult world that he refuses to join.

Arrow Academy presents Volker Schlöndorff’s masterpiece in its original theatrical version and the Director’s Cut, seen for the first time in the UK after its Cannes Film Festival premiere.

SPECIAL FEATURES:
- High Definition and Standard Definition presentation of the original theatrical version [1080p]
- High Definition presentation of the Director’s Cut [Blu-ray only 1080p]
- New restoration of both the theatrical version and the brand new Director’s Cut approved by director Volker Schlöndorff
- 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio
- Audio commentary with director/co-screenwriter Volker Schlöndorff
- Brand new interview with Volker Schlöndorff
- Original Trailer [Blu-ray only]
- Comprehensive booklet featuring brand new writing on the film by George Lellis and Hans-Bernhard Moeller, authors of Volker Schlondorff's Cinema: Adaptation, Politics and the Movie-appropriate, as well as extracts from Volker Schlöndorff’s diary, writing by Jean Claude Carrière and Günter Grass, illustrated with archival stills.
- Artwork presentation packaging featuring newly commissioned artwork and three original posters

I actually have never seen this movie since the VHS era, because the little kid's expression on the cover creeps me out. Maybe one brave day I will know what I am missing.

According to the Arrow website, The Tin Drum will be locked to B.

Apparently the Arrow Tin Drum is region free. I thought it was announced as B-locked.

Gary doesn't say where this "contrast flickering" is, but if it's at the start of the film (the scenes with Koljaiczek) and the gathering in the rain with the elderly Poles later on, it's because Schlöndorff deliberately shot this footage with an old hand-cranked camera to create an otherworldly effect. He explains this in the commentary.

I just received a test disc for this and popped it into my PS3 (the quickest way to check) and it played without fault, but again it's a test disc and the finished product may be locked--the sheet I received with the disc indicates this is a region B release.

Maybe they decided to change the region coding, who knows (wishful thinking).

I've checked with Arrow - it's definitely Region B: an unavoidable contractual requirement.

As with Ashes and Diamonds (albeit the other way round), the region coding of the checkdiscs didn't match the one of the final product.

That's very welcome news. If Arrow just become a little more fussy with what video transfers they deem is good enough for release, they'll certainly be welcome as another top tier label. Their extras and packaging are usually superb! I'm really looking forward to both this and The Tin Drum!
