More comapnies striving to create definitive editions is never a bad thing. Let's hope these two are good also.

I don't know how Amazon can manage to keep the umlaut in Schlöndorff but lose all the apostrophes, but that's Amazon for you.

I thought this was actually a misprint on the documentation I received, where it says it's region free, but the disc I have is region locked to B. Granted, it's a test disc.

Hmm - I wonder if this is a Winstanley situation where the checkdiscs are region-locked but the final product is region-free?

My only worry is that if you cram two versions on one blu-ray,the bitrate will be too low therefore making the PQ suffer.

I actually have never seen this movie since the VHS era, because the little kid's expression on the cover creeps me out. Maybe one brave day I will know what I am missing.

According to the Arrow website, The Tin Drum will be locked to B.

Apparently the Arrow Tin Drum is region free. I thought it was announced as B-locked.

Gary doesn't say where this "contrast flickering" is, but if it's at the start of the film (the scenes with Koljaiczek) and the gathering in the rain with the elderly Poles later on, it's because Schlöndorff deliberately shot this footage with an old hand-cranked camera to create an otherworldly effect. He explains this in the commentary.

I just received a test disc for this and popped it into my PS3 (the quickest way to check) and it played without fault, but again it's a test disc and the finished product may be locked--the sheet I received with the disc indicates this is a region B release.

Maybe they decided to change the region coding, who knows (wishful thinking).

I've checked with Arrow - it's definitely Region B: an unavoidable contractual requirement.

As with Ashes and Diamonds (albeit the other way round), the region coding of the checkdiscs didn't match the one of the final product.

That's very welcome news. If Arrow just become a little more fussy with what video transfers they deem is good enough for release, they'll certainly be welcome as another top tier label. Their extras and packaging are usually superb! I'm really looking forward to both this and The Tin Drum!
