Dammit does anyone know what is going on with adieu au langage? The synopsis at Wild Bunch has me salivating:

The idea is simple:
A married woman and a single man meet.
They love, they argue, fists fly.
A dog strays between town and country.
The seasons pass.
The man and woman meet again.
The dog finds itself between them.
The other is in one,
the one is in the other
and they are three.
The former husband shatters everything.
A second film begins:
the same as the first,
and yet not.
From the human race we pass to metaphor.
This ends in barking
and a baby's cries.
In the meantime, we will have seen
people talking of the demise of the dollar,
of truth in mathematics
and of the death of a robin.

Fingers crossed it emerges for Cannes, whether it's in competition or not, I'm sure JLG doesn't care. Then again I still haven't managed to see 3x3D from last year.

70' sounds good to me - he's made several medium-length works, I wish more filmmakers would. With all the changes happening in how we consume movies, 90 minutes as the standard bearer for a feature film is probably due for reassessment. Notre musique was 80'.

New NSFW trailer for Adieu au Language. Seems like another trip down the Godard-hole!

Despite Thierry Frémaux's statement to the effect that 'Jean-Luc promises to be there,' Godard says nothing will make him go to Cannes. He goes on to say if he wins the Palme d'or he'll give it to his financial adviser, and that he would much prefer to receive no prize at all, because it would inevitably be standing in more for the whole of his career. Further, he admits he would've liked to have won the Palme in his youth, but in retrospect he's glad to have avoided it.

Craig Keller from MoC wrote:ADIEU AU LANGAGE by Godard. Now is not the time for hyperbole. It is simply a landmark in the history of cinema, on the order of Picasso's Les Demoiselles d'Avignon or, for that matter, Breathless. A complete and total reinvention of form and what cinema even is.

I get the feeling from early reactions that Adieu au Langage will go over much better than Film Socialisme. I rather enjoyed this: https://mubi.com/notebook/posts/cannes- ... au-langage" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Saw this yesterday morning at an UGC at Forum Les Halles (right before the Bill Viola exhibition in the afternoon) - what an amazing visual experience in one day! For the first time i felt bad not having seen a more "spectacle-driven" movie before in 3D. In fact this was my first 3D film so i basicaly must have missed most of the interesting and differnt approches to this technique. Still one could easily realize that this technique adds additional layers and possibilities to Godards way of showing (and telling?) us things. If i remember correctly, the one effect where the actor "moves" to the right while the actress is sitting on the stairs in the appartement with some kind of dissolve was used twice. Something similar happens earlier in the movie at Lac Léman with the other actress and the "german character". As some observers allready pointed out, this is indeed mind blowing - something i have not seen before in cinema. There are also some amazing shots of water/waves at Lac Léman that resembled the Viola images later that day.

I'm depressed. When this gets released onto dvd/blu, I won't be able to watch it properly.

Maybe some distributor out there will be crazy enough to do a 3D bluray release - do those work okay with the proper equipment (player/TV/etc)? Or is it only an approximation of the 3D that's in theaters?

Also, if anyone has any idea, please tell us - how long will the film be in general release in Paris? Because I might make it out there again this summer, and this would be one of the primary motivators...

Maybe this could be Criterion's second 3D Blu release!

I'm certain that this will have a 3D home release. Herzog and Wenders already have art-house films with 3D BD releases available. Of course you would need the necessary equipment.

According to the article:
It will open commercially in New York City in late October, at the Film Society of Lincoln Center and IFC Center, followed by a national theatrical rollout on 3D screens. A digital VOD, home media and 3D Blu-ray release is planned for 2015.

that means it's a sure bet for the NY Film Festival, and with the 3D gimmick, I wouldn't be surprised if it gets one of the big slots (Opening, Closing, Centerpiece)

Here's the letter film that Godard recused himself with at Cannes this year. Unfortunately it is not subbed but a transcript is attached.

I have to admit that I find Khan Khanne as dull and shruggable as a lot of late-period Godard, but Adieu au langage is indeed a stunner. Totally revolutionary use of 3D to declare war on naturalism, and an Iron Man workout for the visual cortex. (The rest of the brain, not so much).

Does anyone know if there's a way to find out how much longer Adieu will be in theaters in France? I'm going for about a month starting mid-September and I had really hoped there would be one screen where it hangs on until then. I've found a screening in Aubervilliers happening August 30 so it doesn't seem that far-fetched that it would be somewhere a couple weeks later. I'm going to be devastated if I get there right as it's ending and then it plays the NYFF while I'm in Paris. Well, devastated relative to the overall greatness of visiting Paris anyway.
