I was shocked to discover via my local theatre's newsletter that this is actually coming out in two weeks. I thought it was a Christmas release? Also I've seen no advertising for this whatsoever, but I don't watch a lot of live TV so I may be missing the film's blitz campaign

I've seen some spots for it. Most make it look like the completely generic romcom it probably is, but I saw a different version on Comedy Central and if I didn't know any better I'd have assumed it was a Danny McBride vehicle.

Isn't that a bit excessively dismissive over a pretty big problem though. Whatever lamed parts of the Internet may react inappropriately to that doesn't lessen that this seems a pretty clear cut case of yellow face which the last time I checked was something people feel signifies racism.

But is it? Hawaii is the definition of a melting pot, and finding soneone of Vietnamese heritage who looks like an Emma Stone is really not out of the question. There's always the matter of whether an actual mixed race actor wouldn't be better, sure, but yellow-face is pretty strong a word until more info about the film is out there.

I have never met a full Vietnamese person who looks anything like Stone and I highly doubt you'll find any who do. I'd say it is definitely out of the question. Now of course this doesn't effect if the film is good (I'm really holding out hope if just because of the excellent cast), but to call casting clearly not any sort of Asian Emma Stone as a Vietnamese person is a very clear cut case of yellowface.

That's my point. Assuming a Hawaiian by the name of "Ng" is going to be full blooded Vietnamese is not necessarily an accurate snapshot of Hawaii today. It's very much a mix-blooded region, often to a highly ambigous degree.

Since this is embargoed til Thursday, there's no guarantee, but a commenter on IMDB says her character is only 1/4 native Hawaiian

I think I'd be more likely offended by the fact it's a Cameron Crowe movie than Stone playing a Vietnamese girl.

While I can understand the objection, I honestly think the objection (the "all white" show and no native Hawaiians) is an overreaction. This is on the level of Spike Lee objecting to Clint Eastwood's Flags of Our Fathers for not having black soldiers in it. It's all about the story you are telling and where it's set and who is involved.
I mean shouldn't we retroactively call Punch-Drunk Love racist for the same reasons? (And yes, that word is overused to the point where it has lost meaning.)

Edit: Oh you mean when they go to Hawaii? I don't think I get it. There were 'native' looking people there too, albeit probably more for the benefit of tourists. Which is a real thing that happens probably more often than a couple white people going to Hawaii for a few romantic days and meeting someone local who proceeds to exhibit a rich, three-dimensional character arc.

It's an absurd comparison to make between a white actor being cast in a role as a person of color (though it sounds like that's only rather mildly what's going on here and a certain race being left out of a story that's being told. I don't understand your point either, djproject, and I'm going to guess that I don't want to hear you elaborate on it, either.

Early reviews are hammering this film. I thought the part about Emma Stone's character was a joke until I looked it up. Though I suspect there will be little backlash since the film will likely be a box office dud.

Crowe most likely peaked with "Almost Famous," but I still have a soft spot for his lightweight dramedy stylings, even if they're not what they used to be.
