Well it is indeed a beautiful film. Anyone else notice the intertitles are similar to (I presume taken from) Jeremy Blake's work in Punch-Drunk Love?

Knew nothing of that film until I watched the trailer after reading your remark. There must have been a glut of studio films in that era trying to emulate the most lavish part of old Hollywood while fusing it with a contemporary sense: New York New York, Pennies from Heaven, 1941, this...at the very least, the other three have wonderful production values and work well as spectacle.

It's a lot of fun - especially for fans of Tom Waits. Coppola made that film immediately after "Apocalypse Now" as a studio-bound antidote to his previous filmmaking experience.

It's handsomely made, but at the service of a pretty lousy movie overall. And this is coming from someone who likes the overblown style of Rumble Fish / Twixt et al Coppola!

Agreed. It's fun to look at and listen to, but not so much beyond that. I DO, however, like the couple of songs that express the characters' inner thoughts, which diametrical oppose the action. For instance, a love scene is accompanied by Crystal Gayle singing "Is There Any Way Out of This Dream?" There is at least one more scene like that in the film. Perhaps it isn't unique, but I like the way this almost-musical is able to express the thoughts of characters that are not able to act in a way that is consistent with their feelings.

The early reviews out of Venice have been universally positive.

Qualified praise from Owen Gleiberman. At the very least he gushed over the opening which sounds tremendous.

Yet that review makes me more excited yet since it seems Chazelle is doing the right things that so so so many modern musicals do not

Well the comparison to Singin in the Rain has me excited, as that is undoubtedly the finest musical ever. In fact what was the only good musical from the last few years? The only ones I liked were Once and Sing Street, and even they don't have any dancing

There's those Muppet films plus Queen of Hearts and Love Songs out of France have come out in the last decade. Into the Woods also was good for the first half.

Chicago was great in part because it uses all of the modern crutches of overediting to its advantage, and Reefer Madness: the Movie Musical is a low budget effort made by people who understand the genre well. I thought Stage Fright was a novel idea with decent execution, though it's not a great film

Yeah don't know how I forgot theMuppets, considering A Muppet Christmas Carol is my third favorite musical as well. I dislike Chicago very much, same goes to Moulin Rouge! but just remembered that Hedwig was pretty great.
