He's exactly the right person to do it if it's going to be done, but the headline could be "Mel Gibson to eat breakfast" and social media would be irritated by it (and with, arguably, good reason). So it's difficult to engage with the actual reaction to it until it exists.

What's the argument for denying him breakfast?

I'll be too busy causing all the wars in the world to see it.

Urgh. I'd rather they asked him to write and direct an original western from scratch.

How so?

It may not even be a western, as I believe Warner's scrapped earlier plans for a
Wild Bunch "remake" involved a contemporary setting and drug trafficking.
With Gibson already working on what is promised to be the "biggest film in history. It's that good," according to Christ performer Jim Caviezel, I don't see why he needs to be even considering any kind of remake of a film like
The Wild Bunch.

For better or worse I think he is an excellent director of battles/violence on a larger scale. Can't think of a current day director I'd think of as a significantly better fit than Gibson, even if the plot outside of the violence winds up falling flat.

Remaking another Peckinpah. Can't do it. Not the right way, anyway.
Exhibit A: Straw Dogs.
Is Hollyweird that bankrupt of story ideas?

This is fantastic news. Hopefully he doesn't foul up the sentimentality to be surface level melodrama. Now as for the violence...
if anything so outlandish such as when that soldier uses a torso as a shield in Hacksaw Ridge
That felt completely inapproriate and misplaced for that kind of film pops up in this remake well I'd say it's wholly welcome.

Yes, for at least 30 years.

I agree with mfunk about the action scenes which will most certainly look good. It will also more than likely be more violent if Hacksaw Ridge is anything to go by. Whether Gibson understands the Revisionist Western part of the original though, that remains to be seen.

I agree with mfunk as well. At first I was WTF!? but then as I thought about it I was more into the idea.

Frankly if I wanted to see action scenes shot that way I wish they would hire Ridley Scott instead. Gibson's fairly no talent behind the camera and should just stick to acting.

Gibson's apology for all the violent behaviour and Anti-Semitism from 2005-2011 was pretty much a non-apology and yet he gets new acting and directing offers while Polanski gets kicked out of the Academy and Allen is having difficulties getting new films financed. To be absolutely clear, I don't feel in the remotest sorry for Polanski and Allen, and yeah, you could argue that Gibson did a few years in the wilderness until Hacksaw Ridge happened, but he never struck me as particularly remorseful so it's galling that he gets a free pass from WB. Feels a bit crass in today's climate.

I think it shows that anti-Semitism is excused by far more than we'd like to believe, especially with that other current climate we got going on. Even we here at this forum had to deal with a longtime (and now former) member who posted an anti-Jewish slur in a completely blasé fashion only a few days ago, as though it were a normal element of discourse

Interestingly, Tony Scott was apparently slated to direct this remake 7 years ago, before his untimely passing.

Sarah Silverman posted something online protesting his appointment. Whether that will deter Warner Brothers I don't know. I certainly feel there are better candidates.

I feel like we can view anti-Semitism as unacceptable – and, indeed, make people accountable for expressing it – without trying to stop someone from creating. I'm not particularly interested in Gibson's work and have 0% likelihood of watching this, but I'd be disappointed if he were stopped from making it for political reasons.

I have no problem with him directing/starring in movies. I was just putting forth a hypothesis on why he's having an easier time than some others despite the #MeToo climate, though it still seems really bizarre that he's getting this free pass when many others aren't
