Very sad. He was always my favourite Monty Python member and a talented director in his own right.

In addition to Python, I was particularly fond of his excellent TV series Medieval Lives - a hugely entertaining corrective to prevalent views of medieval history.

I have very found memories of imitating his shrill, over the top voice from Monty Python when I was much younger, much to the chagrin of everyone around me. He'll be sorely missed.

I'll always remember him for the powerfully erotic charge he brought to the many, many housewives he portrayed during the Monty Python series. And, you know, making two of the funniest comedy films ever made in Holy Grail and Life of Brian. The Meaning of Life is pretty good too!

In terms of his later work we should remember that he directed Personal Services in 1987 (he appears in the trailer!), starring Julie Walters and based on the life of Cynthia Payne and released in the same year as the other Payne biopic, Wish You Were Here. And then there is the live action version of The Wind In The Willows from 1996 (which I usually bracket in with the run of late 90s live action versions of James and the Giant Peach and The Borrowers, which it comes in the middle of).

And checking on imdb, I note that he co-directed one of the episodes of the great Kombat Opera series, aka the comedy series done in opera and satirising various television trends of the time, The South Bragg Show (NSFW). It sort of combines the fourth wall breaking historian presenter from Holy Grail with a commentary on organised religion from Life of Brian, plus the musical numbers from Meaning of Life! If only Cats could have been like this!

His work with Monty Python tends (understandably) to overshadow the fact that he was an excellent mediaevalist. Even the enormously silly Holy Grail is more accurate a picture of the mediaeval world by far than any other King Arthur film I can think of.

He played God in Dupontel's Le créateur, here's hoping all he hears is constructive feedback

RIP -- I'll always have a fondness for his film PERSONAL SERVICES, which seems to have almost completely dropped off the map.

His cameo in L.A. Story always manages to make my brain explode, every time.

He directed one of the best episodes of The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles. His episode was set and filmed in Barcelona and featured Picasso and Sergei Diaghilev and a bunch of spy hijinks at the ballet. The episode is playful and fun, and very unfussy. As a kid it was by far my favorite episode of a much–beloved series.
