What comes after 1960?

The 1960 mini-list runs until the end of March. In the interest of giving everyone time to adequately prepare for whatever comes next, please state your preference for what that should be in this poll.

I voted for the first option, but I am on board with either 1961 option, in case it comes down to option three winning by one vote

I will add votes for the first two options and pit them against the third to determine what we do immediately next

It’s a cool idea, but on the other end of the spectrum, I’m ready to start the 70s and probably won’t be participating in future single-year lists. I appreciate the recs and getting to some films I didn’t comb over within the last year, but I’m spent on the 60s. I’d be more flexible towards doing this if we started in the next decade, though this isn’t how I like to structure my viewings within a decade in general. Still, happy to be the minority if the voting body favors single years to keep enthusiasm and participation in lists projects alive, and appreciate the creativity around this goal

Whenever we do the '70s, my plan is to keep going with the individual year mini-lists, if only to keep discussion active throughout the duration of the project. It is of course completely optional and does not preclude participating in the old way

I was skeptical about the added regimentation but moving between 1960 viewings and general 60s catch-up has worked well for me. Plus, sorting library DVD listings and streaming sites by a single year enjoyably focuses my queue in comparison to the hundred or more titles I’m left pondering for decade viewings. I like seeing and discussing notable second and third tier movies that I would have probably skipped otherwise.

So, if I’m reading you right, there will be a thread for the overall 70s list project as well as mini-list threads, meaning that if I see a film I want to plug from 1977 at the start of the project, I can either post it in the main list while the rest of the forum is on 1970 or wait seven months to post in a thread that might garner more discussion? Just trying to get my bearings straight- if enough people want mini lists, attempting engagement in the overall decade thread might split participation and not work out so well. I guess it’ll be an experiment..

I'm with twbb: I like the progressive annual concept, but I'm ready for the 70s.

I tend to not dig as deep as some people here (not nearly so).
I did watch/rewatch around 30 films for the 1960s decade list, but I had already run out of steam a month or so before the deadline. Just two 1960s films in January, and none in February.
That said, various "real life" issues mean I haven't watched many films in 2022 altogether, and those I did watch were part of an informal 2021 catch-up.
In other words, don't mind me too much.

You could talk up a late '70s film early in the main thread and then probably quote your discussion and remind people to watch it when we hit that year. I think ultimately it will make sense to fold all the mini-lists back into each decade thread, but we'll see if that works given the relative level of discussion in each thread. I do think any suggestions you make are more likely to be considered by someone under this new approach in an individual year thread than under the old approach in a decade one

I would much rather have the individual year lists kept as separate threads in perpetuity. There is far less chance I come back at a later date to make my way through years past (as we have with all past list project threads) if they’re just dumped back into the more amorphous decade thread now

That's fair. I was just thinking that would leave us with a pretty cluttered subforum after a while, but I can do whatever

So regardless of what the outcome of the poll is, will the individual year lists be held even if the number of submissions for 1960 is under ten, which has been the bar for whether or not a mini-list is worth compiling? And if it is met, will the individual year lists continue if participation dwindles along this model to under ten at any point? It seems presumptuous to plan so far ahead and embrace a model when in a vacuum people may be voting in preference for the model right now pitted against two choices, but ultimately we have evidence that we get enough submissions for full decade lists vs a question mark for the mini-lists, making them not as securely representative of what works for most at this juncture, as this poll might intend to indicate? After all, the polls have proven to fail to garner the number of participants voting before (Film Club selections, Star list projects), so it seems like a strategy worth revisiting based on actual numbers, even if it’s waiting for a sample size of 1. Just a thought.

That bar was actually my own set for mini-lists. As far as I know, swo hasn’t indicated any contributor number goals for the lists he runs

Oh I’m aware of that, but it’s still the bar that’s been set at this juncture - so I’m just posing an earnest question on how actual figures will be factored into the application of the model over time. Maybe a better way of saying it is: Does this poll cement a long-term plan in place regardless of enthusiastic participation in the mini-lists as we try it out beyond a few weeks?

I don't have thresholds, and also, even if a given year doesn't garner much participation, it still serves the larger discussion for the decade in a way that doesn't feel wasted like that month when five of us watched some Catherine Deneuve films. I'm happy to have separate threads for each year (especially since it makes the list of eligible titles easier to find at a moment's notice) but part of why I'd thought of these mini-lists as naturally pertaining to the overall decade thread is that at the end of any ten-year block, the combination of all discussion might just look like a mostly chronologically ordered and much more robust version of a regular discussion thread. To me, the biggest difference will be that during, say, month 6 of the 1970s project, there should be at least a moderate amount of enthusiastic discussion about the newly eligible 1975 films, as opposed to the occasional scattered tumbleweed in the 1970s thread.
I'm also planning to be pretty low effort about posting the annual results (partly so I don't burn out) which puts even less pressure on how much engagement we get for any given year. But I am nothing if not a reasonable man, and if most people decide they want to change course again at some point, we can open that option up for discussion

Yes, we get to spend the rest of the year pretending we are trapped in the 1960s instead of being actually trapped in 2020

I just now did the math and realized that we'll be wrapping up 1969 at the end of December. Would everyone be cool if I also made that the Round 2 deadline, so that we can start 1970 in January? Then we could generally have the first ten months of each year dedicated to individual years and the last 2 months for considering the decade as a whole and orphan rescue
