I’ve somehow yet to see this even though I read the book when it came out and found it a strong and typically moralistic noir story long before I even knew what noir was

It's very good and very much Raimi trying his hand at a Coens movie, though with a good deal more restraint than that might suggest. All three leads are great but the thing I'll remember from this is Bridget Fonda justifying her husband's actions by raging at the idea of her family having to eat out less often.

Bridget Fonda’s performance is incredible. Up with Bruce Campbell’s in Evil Dead 2 as the best ever directed by Raimi

Speaking of Raimi, he’s also MIA on the extras for Drag Me to Hell in 4K from Shout

Unfortunately, Raimi no longer participates in special features. Which is a shame, because his audio commentaries are a blast.

Has he given a reason like P.T. Anderson has? I thought he didn’t contribute to Darkman because of his issues with Universal on it, but it’s definitely with all of his films now aside from supervising the transfers

I don't think he has said anything, but I think Michael Felsher of Red Shirt Pictures said Raimi just doesn't like doing interviews. He will obviously do the contractually obligated stuff for the new releases.

Probably Raimi's best movie, and he's made a lot of really strong movies.

I watched the film twice and it didn't click with me. But that's probably more on me than the film. For what it's worth, I'm indifferent to Fargo (which I think this was unfavorably compared to when it opened), too.

I saw it a lot as a kid, and liked it back then, but also unfavorably compared it to Fargo

One of Raimi's best (probably my favourite after The Evil Dead, and possibly Darkman too), and definitely his most mature - from what I've seen at least. I feel like if it's Coens-adjacent, it's perhaps actually more Blood Simple/No Country than Fargo, despite the similar setting to the latter.
