Master List for non-US/UK foreign international 4K UHD releases of films with original English audio but no English subtitles OR foreign-language audio with English subtitles. All of these releases are therefore partially English friendly. All releases completely English unfriendly are listed here.

Note that many of these discs, particularly Italian and French ones, have localized / translated on-screen text cards, titles and credits that aren't necessarily subtitled an / or forced subtitles.

Red category (reference):
- 36th Precinct / 36 Quai des Orfèvres 4K (France)
- Apocalypse Now Theatrical Cut (Italy) - better compression than Lionsgate and Studiocanal releases, exceptional 5.1 audio close to the OG mix
- Apocalypse Now Redux (Italy) - part of Eagle's Collector's Edition with all three cuts in 4K, Theatrical and Final Cut discs are repackages of their standalone editions, so no extra sound options or anything like that. Technical details here:
Spoiler
APOCALYPSE NOW F.TO VIDEO BD: 2.35:1 @ 24 1080/24p HD | F.TO VIDEO 4K: 2.35:1 3840x2160p @ 24 fps DolbyVision | LINGUE: Italiano DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 - Inglese DTS HD Master Audio 5.1 | SOTTOTITOLI: Italiano | DURATA: 147 minuti
APOCALYPSE NOW REDUX F.TO VIDEO BD: 2.35:1 @ 24 1080/24p HD | F.TO VIDEO 4K: 2.35:1 3840x2160p @ 23.98 fps DolbyVision | LINGUE: Italiano DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 - Inglese DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 | SOTTOTITOLI: Italiano | DURATA BD: 203 minuti | DURATA 4K: 196 minuti
APOCALYPSE NOW FINAL CUT F.TO VIDEO BD: 2.39:1 1080p @ 23.98 HD | F.TO VIDEO 4K: 2.39:1 3840x2160p @ 23.98 fps (DolbyVision HDR10) UHD | LINGUE: Italiano DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 - Inglese Dolby Atmos | SOTTOTITOLI: Italiano | DURATA: 180 minuti
- Apocalypse Now Final Cut (Italy) - better encode that restores subtly filtered high-frequency detail on the LG and SC
- Black Sunday (Italy) - review and caps
- Blood for Dracula (Germany)
- Chet Baker: Let's Get Lost (France) - impressions
- Flesh for Frankenstein (Germany)
- Flow (Italy) - the only release to have a HDR grade, caps
- Killers of the Flower Moon (Italy) - very strong 5.1 audio, intertitles are translated into Italian but English subtitles are available for these sections and the Osage dialogue. First Pressing Region B-locked.
- La La Land (Italy) - better compression and errors in the LG master are fixed, audio 5.1 only
- Lost Highway (Germany) - best compression (FiM encode)

- The Crimson Rivers (France)
- Dogville (Italy)
- The Dreamers (France) - solid encode but the UK Icon is better

- The Grilling / Garde à vue (France)
- Lock Up (Italy) - better compression than SC/LG
- Maria (Italy) - good presentation, subtle HDR but no English Atmos unlike the SC BD, which is a brilliant release and only marginally inferior to native 4K quality

- Arizona Dream (Germany/France) - heavy chroma noise and encoding issues
- (La Femme) Nikita (France/UK & Germany) - chroma noise and encoding issues (detailed breakdown)
- Point Break (Germany) - minor chroma noise and encoding issues

- 1984 (France) - DNR, the German Capelight is best
- 9 1/2 Weeks (LCJ Editions, France) - caps. Upscale from the BD with fake grain and horrendously encoded.
- Bloodsport (Germany / UK) - bad compression, moderate DNR in select shots, 1.78 AR instead of 1.85
- Cliffhanger (Italy) - green-ish SC master that restores some blown-out highlights compared to the Sony master, bad HDR10 compression (details)

- The Hitcher (Germany)

Fistful of Dollars, A (Alternative: 1985 CBS/Fox LaserDisc)
For All Mankind (Alternative: 2009 Eureka UK BD’s 5.1 (created from original audio stems) or 2.0 (OG matrixed stereo))
Full Metal Jacket (Alternative: 1999 Warner R1 DVD)
Godfather, The (Alternative: No good alternative)
Great Escape, The (Alternative: 1991 MGM LaserDisc)
In the Heat of the Night (Alternative: 2018 Criterion BD)
It's a Wonderful Life (Alternative: 1991 Republic Pictures LaserDisc)
Jaws (Alternative: 1995/1997 MCA LaserDisc)
Servant, The (Alternative: Universal DVD)
Seventh Seal, The (Alternative: 1993 JP LaserDisc)
Vertigo (Alternative: 2005 Universal DVD)

Light filtering

Get Carter (Alternative: 2000 Warner US DVD)
Piano, The (Criterion & StudioCanal) (Alternative: 2014 StudioCanal UK BD’s 5.1 for a faithful de-matrixing of the original Dolby Stereo track, or (maybe) 2012 Lionsgate US BD’s 2.0 for matrixed stereo)
Taxi Driver (Very minor. Likely not discernible. Alternative: 1990 Criterion LaserDisc or 1991 Japanese Columbia Tri-Star LaserDisc)

Non-OG mix & misc. other issues

American Gangster (Non-OG. Alternative: original BD)
Apocalypse Now (Theatrical Cut) (US Lionsgate UHD only has Atmos remix; IT Eagle UHD only has an earlier remixed 5.1. Alternative: German UHD & US BD purportedly have OG 5.1 in AC-3)
Back to the Future Trilogy (A handful of dialog has minor changes over the years. Alternative: LaserDiscs should have original versions)
Big Lebowski, The (Comparison against Cinema DTS disc reveals that UHD mix is non-OG.)
Blade Runner (Atmos track has later remixed effects. Alternative: 2007 BD Dolby TrueHD 5.1 is closer to OG)
Casino (DTS:X’s surround channels are boosted compared to theatrical. Alternative: Cinema DTS or BD 5.1)
Deer Hunter, The (StudioCanal’s 5.1 is sourced from 70mm mix but has a brief audio drop at one point. Their 2.0 is possible OG stereo and doesn’t have the drop. Shout’s 2.0 and 5.1 both have this audio drop, and neither sounds like StudioCanal’s 5.1. Hypothesis is their 2.0 is a downmix from 5.1, which in turn is an old remix.)
Escape from New York (Shout’s 2.0 is a unique faithful remaster of the OG theatrical, whereas Eagle only offers 5.1 remix. Shout > StudioCanal.)
Gladiator (Non-OG. Alternative: Cinema DTS or Signature Collection DVD AC-3)
Jurassic Park (Non-OG, but OG has distorted vocal. Alternative: 3D BD’s DTS-HD MA track seems to be best-sounding)
Killing, The (MGM DVD has “the most balanced sound”)
Labyrinth (Advertised OG 2.0 on the 35th anniversary steelbook is likely a downmix. Alternative: LaserDisc or 1999 Sony US DVD 2.0)
Marathon Man (No OG mono. But the 5.1 remix sounds good and likely came from original audio stems. Alternative: Warner/Paramount BD has lossy restored mono)
Matrix, The (Comparison against Cinema DTS disc reveals that both Atmos and 5.1 are remixes)
Reservoir Dogs (No OG 2.0. Alternative: US/JP LaserDisc 2.0)
Shawshank Redemption, The (Noticeable clipping. Alternative: 2008 US BD TrueHD 5.1)
Shining, The (No OG mono. Alternative: 1999 Warner DVD)
Taking of Pelham One Two Three, The (No OG mono. Alternative: MGM DVD or BD)
Texas Chain Saw Massacre, The (Second Sight) (Filtered and missing a few grunts. Alternative: LaserDisc/VHS likely will have less filtered and correct audio. MPI UHD’s mono appears to be correct content-wise.)
Thing, The (Non-OG. Alternative: Signature LaserDisc AC-3 or Shout BD 2.0)
Top Gun (Atmos track widely considered a bad mix. Alternative: US THX LaserDisc’s AC-3 5.1 or PCM 2.0)
Total Recall (Neither the US Lionsgate nor IT Eagle UHD has OG 2.0. Alternative: US LaserDisc) [/color]

Hello and welcome to our new thread to discuss UHD reissues.

Please note that any discussion regarding encodes, pausing titles to zoom in and see a smudge, HDR10 application processes, etc will take place in the Encodes thread - if discussion here devolves into that, it'll be moved. If it continues, warnings are going to be issued. EDIT: I've already moved one. Please be mindful of this change.

Also now available - a packaging/special editions thread!

Can hyperlinks be added to the list titles above so the reader can read the relevant post which mentions why a particular film went in to a particular category?

Might take several weeks since I'm traveling abroad for a week next week to visit my mum who has a rare form of cancer. Nicholas and fus1on may be able to update their posts sooner than I do mine. I can get to it eventually but obviously it is not a priority. Thank you for your understanding everyone.

PS.: there won't be a hyperlink for every single title either. But where there's a review I'll try to add it.

Fus1on, you have Rosemary's Baby in red in your post for the Paramount Scares set but it's actually a disappointing disc. They fixed the missing audio with the replacement disc but the encode is still not good.

All the best for you and your mother from me as well, Finch / Tim! With a news like that, all things UHD are secondary and please take the time you need. Until then, I’ll edit my post and can collect all the relevant category listings of upcoming releases that are relevant for your list until you return.

Damn, I'm really sorry to hear about that, Tim, and I hope that all goes well. Like everyone else here is saying, take the time that you need and focus more on that rather than updating this thread. All of us will still be here to hold down the fort.

I do have Rosemary's Baby listed as orange tier (disappointing) in my thread. The Paramount Scares set is overall pretty solid, with Rosemary's Baby being the one dud in that set. I'm sorry if the orange color I'm using to signify a disappointing tier disc is too similar to the red I'm using for a reference disc.

I think that's what happened. On my phone it looks like it was coded red.

Again thanks everyone. I appreciate it.

Apologies if this has been asked before, but are there any screencap comparisons between the Curzon Memories of Murder and the Criterion BD? I can't seem to find any and want to ensure it's really worth the upgrade for a preferred color grade.

(There are a lot of UHD threads now, and I'm a bit confused about where to post this, so hopefully this is the right place)

I haven't seen a screenshot comparison with the Curzon UHD but this is what caps has to offer for the Criterion and the French BD, which is the same color difference you'd get with the UHDs since they're all SDR: https://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?go=1&a=0 ... 94&i=5&l=0.

My pleasure. :) I forgot to mention that the Curzon UHD is considered to be the best one according to several reports. They started hiring a better encoder with this release after their poor earlier titles.

Yeah, I watched the Curzon a week ago and it is beautiful. Wished there was an HDR grade but still very happy with the version we have.

The Hitcher (Second Sight), as expected, turned out brilliantly.

Project A set (88 Films) is also reference as this screenshot comparison of Pt. 1 by cinemaniac / Kobe shows.

Murder on the Orient Express (KL) is more than disappointing. Audio is either a downmix of the 5.1 or a 2.0 stereo remix.

We're not talking about the UHD, as pretty much nobody so far has it, but about the 2015 BD soundtrack as included on the Studio Canal BD. I reminded there that it'd be good, rather than discussing about the merits of including or not including a cut version, to focus on actual issues like possibly fixing the 2015 soundtrack, that has several issues, and it seemed (like too often on HTF) that nobody knew about this issue in the first place.
However, while it's very likely that Canal is only upgrading the 2015 work to UHD, it has yet to be confirmed.

I was about to shut down the tab Stefan linked to until I saw your great post. This is why I'm not bothering with HTF but in truth, bubbles like that are the ones that need valid arguments like you provided the most in order to see what's really going on instead of focusing on non-issues.

To your question: If you're referring to PQ, it's already confirmed that SC ported over the 2015 restoration and someone on the other forum mentioned that the audio also sounds the same. :(
