Gary Cooper (Morocco) and Ann Harding (Holiday) play star-crossed lovers in Peter Ibbetson, an otherworldly fantasy-romance from celebrated director Henry Hathaway (The Shepherd of the Hills).

Decades after they were separated, architect Peter Ibbetson (Cooper) and his childhood sweetheart, Mary (Harding), are reconnected when her husband hires Ibbetson to design a building. The relationship between the pair is rekindled until Ibbetson accidentally kills a man in self-defence and is sent to prison. Soon, he is visited by Mary in his dreams...

A favourite of the Surrealists, including André Breton and Luis Buñuel, Peter Ibbetson boasts stunning photography from the great Charles Lang (The Big Heat) and acting support from John Halliday (Desire) and Ida Lupino (The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes).

The Kino one had some clunky grain, as I recall. A shame we won't get a new scan. Getting it in any case, for the extras.

Adrian Martin and Geoff Andrew really do always seem to end up on the same releases. and they're a good package deal, I recall very little overlap between them on previous releases

Adrian Martin
@AdrianMartin25

My 16th DVD/Blu-ray commentary for 2024 is also one of my all-time favourite films, one I’ve loved since early teen age. Will 88 minutes be enough for me??

I saw this recently and thought it was an effective, visually strong romance wrung out of unlikely material, but didn’t (yet?) find the highs of weirdness or mise-en-scène promised by its fans. Looks like a promising release.

Yeah, I think it’s an okay film but likewise find its oddness/alleged singularity to be a bit overstated. I thought the later noir the Guilt of Janet Ames, which name checks this source material, was a much stranger film without the baggage of high expectations (except for those I’m placing on it now)
