One Criterion Forum Award After Another (2025)

THE 2025 CRITERION FORUM AWARDS

Welcome to 2025’s annual year end list. We will mostly follow the new format established by swo17 last year of first nominating titles before voting, and encompassing all labels into one list.
Directions for the nominating process, which has ended
As a reminder:

Instead of having Criterion awards and then Other Label awards, we'll just have one awards thread for all labels combined. That's a lot of eligible titles and extras, so to make this more manageable for everyone, we will first construct a ballot out of the things that at least two people want to be able to vote for.

STEP 1: Review this first post to see if there is anything you'd like to vote for that isn't already on the ballot. If it's already on the ballot, there's no need to mention it.
STEP 2: If it's not on the ballot, review the rest of the thread to see if anyone else has already nominated that same thing.
STEP 3: If no one else has, then you can post that you would like to nominate that thing for the applicable category. If someone else has nominated it, then you can post that you would like to second that nomination. After something has been both nominated and seconded, I will add it to the ballot.
STEP 4: You are encouraged to explore other people's nominations to see if you find them worthy of seconding.

NOTE: There will be no voting for or against other members. In a way, you are all winners. In another, more accurate way, none of you are.

ROUND 1 FOR NOMINATIONS AND SECONDS ENDS MARCH 15

ROUND 2 FOR VOTING PROPER WILL RUN THROUGH THE END OF MARCH

I will keep a running tally here of everything that is eligible for the final ballot. Depending on what is nominated, I may create additional categories. If there are sufficient nominated titles from any of the boutiques, I will add those labels into contention for a “Best (label) Release” category.

The idea behind having a fairly long time for Round 1 is to give people time to order releases from later in the year, to make thoughtful recommendations about worthwhile releases and extras, and to give other people time to explore those recommendations.
Ballots are due by March 31. Ballots are preferred to be voted publicly in this thread, but I will accept PMed votes

You have Seven Women listed as best upgrade but there was no previous release - do you want to vote for it as best release instead?

we all know Mr. Deltoid would win Richard Cranium anyway

I will start compiling a list later, but it does seem we've got started already with some I'd already suggest. I'll second Tori Huynh's Edward Yang cover, first thing I want to do. hopefully me and Maltic compile a legitimate enough commentary list this year

Is there a list of bonus films somewhere that could be a useful guide to pick from? I’m struggling to think of any (even the obvious pick of Meetin' WA was absent from King Lear, tho for obvious reasons)

And not a nomination for bonus feature as I've not seen it yet, but the Arbelos release of The Bloody Lady includes Jurko the Highwayman (Brigand Jurko, Zbojník Jurko).

Possible suggestions for the categories: What is the intent for Overall Release/Boxset/Upgrade distinctions? It would be nice to have separate categories for single film vs box so we're not just voting for a box 2x and single title releases getting the short shrift. For a single film release it would also be nice to have separate categories for a 4k restoration of an older film (or even separate categories for an upgrade to HD & presentation of a film that received a proper 4K restoration) & a more recent film release (or is upgrade to refer to both HD/4K upgrades but not to more recent titles getting a new format/better presentation/better extras?).

Appreciate the suggestions but it’s unlikely these get implemented. Boxes and single films have always competed together for best release, I don’t see any reason why one should be excluded from the overall best release category (especially since boxes tend to top the lists for a good reason, ie they often are the best release). As for upgrades, I am not interested in getting any more granular than the existing category.

Kino's Miracle Mile was apparently released on Dec 31, 2024 but it doesn't appear to have received any attention during last year's awards. If we're allowed to consider that release, I'd nominate Tarzana for Best Bonus Film
