Every Little Thing



The protagonists in this film are the patients and staff at the La Borde psychiatric institute in France. Each summer they perform a play on a stage set in the beautiful grounds of the chateau. The film charts the passage of this magical event and allows the viewer a glimpse at life in one of the world's most highly regarded psychiatric institutions.

Philibert, director of the hugely-acclaimed Etre et avoir and In the Land of the Deaf, calmly and compassionately builds an experience that is less like watching a documentary than like being enveloped in a book of breathlessly honest poetry. He delicately celebrates the work of La Borde and quietly makes us question the distinctions that society applies in classifying as normal or abnormal.

Not a particularly informative blurb, but fans of In the Land of the Deaf and To Be and to Have shouldn't hesitate. This is a real gem of a documentary, following the inmates of a psychiatric clinic as they put on an avant-garde play in the woods. As you'd expect from Philibert, the film manages to avoid all of the obvious sentimentality of the subject, but none of its genuine pathos.

Hell I'm looking forward to this...long live Second Run.

I can't wait to see this film; and I feel guilty for having missed In the Land of the Deaf when it first came out (soon to be rectified). Unfortunately, according to Amazon, we'll have to wait another week, as this and Blissfully Yours have been delayed until May 1.

Yes I can confirm that the release date of Every Little Thing has gone back a week to May 1.

Make that May 8.
