Apologies if there is already a thread on this.

My question is straightforward: reviews of this release mention variable/poor sound quality and the need to turn on the English subtitles to understand what is happening. As I am slightly hearing impaired I'll probably need them for the whole movie.

However, I am based in the UK and the specs for the Warner R2 edition do not mention subtitles. Are there any?

The specs for the R1 version (with an identical cover) do mention subtitles. Again, if an owner of this version could confirm this I'd be grateful.

Gary's review covers the Warner R1 and the Italian Instituto Luce discs, but not Warner's R2 disc. It appears that Warner's R2 disc is identical to their R1 disc and you'll be happy to know that it comes with English subs.

The best reason I can think of for owning the Instituto Luce disc (is it still in print?) would be to have the original Italian language version, also, the open-matte 1.33 format does contain more information, but generally, I prefer watching Warner's disc since it is the better transfer, though I do wish that they had included the Italian audio as well. Maybe they'll get it right next time...

I've been curious about this film for years without ever having seen it. My wife persuaded me that it's worth the effort.
