Anyone know what films will be in this? Or how to find out...

Great find! From the respective page from alapage:

"Contenant aussi bien ses films les plus connus qu'une large sélection d'oeuvres rares, souvent inédites et toutes restaurées en collaboration avec la famille Méliès, ce coffret vous démontrera le talent visuel et créatif d'un virtuose de l'image et vous plongera dans les origines du 7ème art."

Not much of a help, I know, but at least there seems to have been some restoration work, and I wonder what these unreleased films might be...

Absolutely fantastic! It almost doesn't matter which films are in this set, because everything Méliès did is pure gold. Ah, I love those treasure boxes full of rare classics.

From the information in the blurb on a Luxembourg e-tailer site (pixmania.lu), there are over 100 films in the set.

Yup, that's what it says on the little blurb on the cover as well. Warner is doing it, should be a great set.

I've ordered this for our library collection. I hope the discs are in some sort of cases because that tin is getting chucked right into the recycling upon arrival.

As soon as it arrives, could you tell us exactly which 100 films are in the set?

This is very strange. I went to the official Warner France site and I can't find that set anywhere, not even when I do a search for the Prestige Collections. Look for yourself.

Yeah, I think the release may have been canceled. Amazon.fr says it's unavailable, and we have not received the copy I ordered for the library.

What's your dvd budget with the library and how fun is it to shop for them?

I probably shouldn't divulge numbers (we don't even do that internally). Suffice it to say that it's a significant sum (enough to buy a very nice car), yet somehow never enough. And it's not as much fun to shop for the library as you might think because most of the money is earmarked for faculty requests. I cannot tell you how it breaks my heart to have to order things like Crash (2004) or Multiplicity because a professor wants to use it for a class. Or especially how angry I get when I am asked to spend hundreds of dollars on "educational" titles (these people are the worst) only to have them never get checked out, not once, not even by the people who requested them. Really steams my clams.

But I do get to order stuff like this that is important but that I would never buy for myself.

I have on pretty solid authority that there WILL be a R1 set, with more films than this set.

I've heard the R2 was canceled, or put on hold (cranky Melies family members, apparently). Can't divulge further details on R1, but that seems the horse to bet on at this point.

Well if the Melies set was being prepared by David Shepard of Film Preservation Associates (who does a lot of the silent material released through Image) it may be a way off, as it has been reported on the alt.movies.silent newsgroup that he was knocked over by a car about two weeks ago. Apparently the 66-year old will recover though it will be a slow process, as he has broken ribs, a broken arm and other injuries.
