Finally, Welles' The Stranger arrives in R1! I'm assuming this will be a port of the R2 disc.

How about Lang's noir masterpiece, The Woman in the Window? A great companion piece to Lang's Scarlet Street.

Jean de Florette also back in print. The oop disc goes over $50 at ebay and amazon.

Hey, Raise the Red Lantern by MGM? A new progressive transfer?

And the Frankie and Annette(ish) box might indicate a full-on reworking of the Midnite Movies line.

Finally a decent version of the Stranger (if they port the R2 releases). Also good to see Manon of the Spring and Jean de Florette back in print.

July is turning into a hell of a month. The Stranger and Woman in the Window....outstanding news. They will probably be feature-free, which is a shame but I'll take'em.

I'm excited about the Stranger as well. The Roan version was decent, though. Hopefully there will be some extras on the disc.

Kansas City Confidential (1952), The Stranger (1946), The Woman in the Window (1944)
Very excited about these 3 classic noirs, but too bad it's MGM who holds the rights, i wouldn't expect criterion transfers here

I have the German R2 version already and may not buy it. My version comes with the original trailer.

And ANYTHING has to be better than the last R1 release of Raise the Red Lantern.

Apparently MGM/FOX have raised their prices to RSP $19.99, same as Ball of fire.

The Stranger

Raise The Red Lantern

The Woman in the Window

They also list a new release for Inherit the Wind, hopefully anamorphic this time.

$19.99? There had better be a plethora of extras, for that price. Why must MGM continue to disappoint?

I'm hoping 1984 gets re-released. I love the film, but couldn't pass up the opportunity to sell it on eBay for $80.

I can actually hum a few bars of the theme song.

I'm not proud.

Apparently, MGM is coming with their individual line of film noir. But, some genius thinks he can charge SRP$ 19.99 for barebones discs. Anyhow, the artwork is lovely.

I hate Hate HATE MGM. Just a couple of extras and I'd have ponied up, but now I'll be forced to rent.

I swear to god though, if they fuck up the transfer on The Stranger...

I will definitely be picking up these film noirs. Perhaps MGM is taking up Fox's slack on continuing to keep film noir viable on the DVD market. While, I too bemoan the lack of special features, it is still great to have the opportunity to see these films and to own them on DVD. Perhaps someday we will be able to see all the films considered to have been part of the stylistic element of film noir in American cinema.

and maybe, just maybe, MGM will re-release some of their earlier releases in better editions (I'm thinking of The Killing, here)

They already did a very nice transfer of The Stranger in R2land, and will probably release the same. But $20?!

OK, is anyone really gonna pay $20 for these? With the usual online discounts it'll be $13 or so, which isn't too bad.
