Personally, I loathe smoking but that decision is retarded bullshit.

I'm not a smoker either, but it's a horrible decision based on effective lobbying rather than actual concern for content. So it's ok for kids to watch people die and shit get blown up in PG-13 films, but if they see a cigarette (or hear the F-bomb for that matter) it's the end of the world?

If this had to be done, it's about sixty years too late. Disney should be banning the depiction of people eating trans fats instead.

Let's not overreact. Look again at the first sentence of the press release, er, story:

"Walt Disney Co. on Wednesday became the first major Hollywood studio to ban depictions of smoking, saying there would be no smoking in its family-oriented, Disney-branded films and it would "discourage" it in films distributed by its Touchstone and Miramax labels."

This is like taking the bold stance against depictions of anal sex in family-oriented, Disney-branded films. With the exception of Cruella De Vil (who is not exactly a role model to begin with), there hasn't really been a prevalence of smoking in Disney films. "Banning" it now is pretty much so much lip service.

Does this mean that Winston will have to drop their sponsorship of The Flintstones?

My question will now be if they are going to edit out of future DVD releases characters like Cruella de Vil or other Disney characters that have smoked in the film. I read somewhere that they edited the Pecos Bill smoking scene in the DVD release of his short feature.

Hopefully they know better than to fuck with Cruella. That is a sad, but true, fact about Pecos Bill. His short is part of Melody Time, and all the scenes of him smoking have been removed from U.S. home video releases for years.

It's one thing to ban smoking in films aimed directly at children - fine - but to "discourage" it in adult oriented fare leads one down a slippery slope.

I'm sorry, but I am all for this decision. I only wish more films would adopt this attitude...

People treating smoking like it's the most vulgar thing a man or woman can do. It's just smoking, and people need to lighten up. People do it all the time, and sure it's bad for you, and the smokers are already well aware of it too, so why push it even more by removing something like a cigarette from a cartoon. Hell, it's Cruela de Ville smoking, the villain, putting it already in a negative light.

I don't smoke, but I just think it's really, really stupid.

I don't know about you guys, but I definitely started smoking because of a scene from a Disney film, so kudos =D>
