July 26, 2007 - The Weinstein Company and Genius Products announced today that the two films that made up the classically under-rated Grindhouse release will hit DVD on two seperate, extended and unrated DVDs.
Quentin Tarantino's serial-killer homage to the old school car chase film, Death Proof will hit shelves with over 30 minutes of additional, never-before-seen footage including the maddening "missing reel" (containing the excised lapdance sequence) as well as a black and white segment in the film's second act. The DVD will hit on September 18, 2007 for a price of $29.95. Features will include:

Meanwhile, the Robert Rodriguez zombie entry, Planet Terror, will attack with more footage, deleted scenes, a full commentary and the infamous missing reel. That disc will drop on October 16, 2007 for a price of $29.95 and it's features will include:

So I guess Planet Terror is coming out after all. Still lame that they're splitting it up, but at least it looks like they're giving us 2 nice sets. I've heard rumors that the trailers will be on both DVDs, but there doesn't appear to be any confirmation for that yet.

The Planet Terror standard DVD cover should've stuck with the original, grindhouse-style poster art instead of the "big head" artwork. That said, the steelbook artwork for both is great.
Also, what the hell does "classically underrated" mean?

I'll definitely be going to Best Buy the day these come out to get those steelbooks, they're very nice looking. Hopefully it won't be a situation like with The Departed where they're all gone in 10 minutes. Whoever does these special editions for Best Buy should be given a promotion and a raise.
Also, according to that Moebius thread the Best Buy steelbooks will each have an exclusive bonus feature.

I,m not familiar with steelbooks, are they just metal cases and are they the same price as the original releases?
Kinda wish there was a Tarantino commentary, I love hearing him talk.
Planet Terror was ok, but l'm definitely buying it, Rodriguez' dvds are great how to's for film making.

Steelbooks are basically Amray cases made out of metal (the inside of the case where the disc sits is clear plastic. I really like them, I think because they have a nice heft to them. As far as I know, when Best Buy did their last limited Steelbook (The Departed) it wasn't priced much higher (if at all) than the standard edition.
The only thing is that they usually sell through them pretty fast (some stores get very small amounts), so if you want one you need to get there when they open.

I'm hoping we get the fake trailers. Its a shame we may never see all of the little things in between either like the warnings and the acuna restaurant advert. I'm glad I saw it twice in theaters.

I'm assuming that the steelbook "bonus feature" might just be the the trailers and I'm pretty sure they will have one, long Grindhouse release on DVD at some point in the future. This is just the first of many more dips into that pool.

I'm betting that the trailers will be on one or both of the DVDs, I know the Weinsteins don't give a fuck about what the consumer wants but I also think they know that they're already pushing it by releasing this as two separate packages and people aren't going to take kindly to having to rebuy the movies just to get the trailers, especially since these two individual sets seem pretty loaded.

Grindhouse DVD News from Comic Con
Edgar Wright and Nick Frost had a panel at Comic Con promoting the DVD for Hot Fuzz and Edgar confirmed that :
Death Proof and Planet Terror will not include the faux trailers. Instead they will later package them up and do a double disc release sometime in the future.

Oh Jesus Fucking Christ. Is Edgar Wright saying that the trailers are going to get their own 2-disc release? I wish someone involved with this project (Tarantino, Rodriguez, anybody really) had the balls to stand up to the Weinsteins and tell them this is fucking ridiculous.

Considering so many people liked on film and not the other it's hardly surprising that the Weinstein's are going to split the DVD release first and then do a deluxe deal with both films together.
Frankly, I prefer it. The fake trailers were cute, but I don't necessarily feel the need to see them again and again and I couldn't stand Death Proof. I get my missing reel and the Rodriguez film school, so I'm more than happy.

Extras are set to include 5 featurettes (Finding Quentin's Gals, The Guys of Death Proof, Kurt Russell as Stuntman Mike, Introducing Zoe Bell and Quentin's Greatest Collaborator: Editor Sally Menke), along with an international poster gallery and the trailer for Double Dare.
Robert Rodriguez's Planet Terror will follow on 10/16 (SRP $29.95). Extras are subject to change, but look for a 2-disc unrated and extended edition as well, containing "the missing reel" along with audio commentary by Rodriguez, deleted scenes, The Badass Babes of Planet Terror featurette and more. Industry sources at Comic-Con were also hinting that the company may release the titles in BOTH Blu-ray Disc and HD-DVD formats sometime later this year, which would signal move for the company to an HD format neutral position. We're working to confirm this.

I'm glad to hear the "missing reel" exists for Planet Terror, because that gag will not work outside the frame of the theatrical "Grindhouse" presentation. The scenes described in the script, and further detailed in the book, solved a number of problems that I had with the theatrical cut in terms of exposition and pace. I just hope all those scenes end up back in the film on top of the missing expositional sequence, the existence of which was otherwise flatout denied in that same book.
