The Imaginarium of Dr Parnassus - A preview from Dreams: the Terry Gilliam fanzine
Anyone else excited to see that a new Terry Gilliam film has been funded? I think this sounds very cool - Gilliam hasn't written one of his own ideas into a script since Baron Munchausen. It's good to see he collaborated on this one with Charles McKeown, maybe this film could be good enough to rival Munchausen and Brazil.
I'm excited. A lot.

You mean since Brazil? Last time I checked Munchausen was definitely an adaptation.

Baron was based off of a dare for him to adapt the Munchausen stories into film, and that's what came out of it.
You can read the basic plot (or at least up to act four)
here, at the wikipedia article. It's very spotty and somewhat uninspired, but I'm willing to bet Gilliam's got more in mind; as it stands, it's like a Gilliam dumping ground.

My mistake about the Munchausen being an adaptation thing - I tend to think of it more as purely Gilliam, since as far as I understood it, Gilliam didn't take anything more from the old stories than the character himself and just kinda riffed on that. Maybe I'm wrong.
Charles McKeown definitely wrote the script for Parnassus with Gilliam. He is certainly involved.

the "Old Stories" were, of course, Nazi propaganda written by Goebbels... Not that Gilliam's adaptation wasn't brilliant, it was just very far removed from the original.
edit: I remember reading somewhere that this one writer claimed that Munchausen was an invention of the Nazi propaganda machine, and that the backstory was even forged... But, upon further research, that writer is, of course, wrong. I know it's all vague, but up until a few hours ago I had never thought to research it myself. Well, now I know.

yeah, it's about time waits got another role, isn't it?
I don't think he's had a sizable movie role since Short Cuts.

But a bewildering cameo in Tony Scott's
Domino, a film that, as I look back on it, feels more like something I could've hallucinated in the midst of some illness...

Whatever happened to Wristcutters? He had a pretty substantial role in that from what I read, but I never actually heard of it hitting theaters…

According to the movie's official website, it opens nationally (!) Nov. 2.

Von Backy's Munchausen was a lavish Nazi era production, but the stories existed long before Goebbels thought of making a film.

Former Monty Python man Terry Gilliam's next project behind the lens, "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus," has conjured a cast including Heath Ledger, Christopher Plummer and Tom Waits.
The project producing team of William Vince, Amy Gilliam and Paris-based producer and distributor Samuel Hadida said Wednesday that securing Gilliam behind the lens was key for the project billed as a fantasy adventure.
Lily Cole, Andrew Garfield and Verne Troyer will also star in the project scheduled to begin shooting in London in December before moving to Vancouver.
Hadida said: "In a time when so many films follow set formulas, Terry's imagination and visual gifts are priceless."
The movie details the story of Dr. Parnassus (Plummer) who has the gift of guiding the imaginations of others and has been dancing with the devil (Waits), who is about to come and collect on the arrangement.
Said Gilliam: "This fun and humorous story about the consequences of our personal choices in life will resonate worldwide."
Gilliam is collaborating with writing partner Charles McKeown on the script.
"Working with Samuel, Amy and William, I am supported in our shared belief and passion in making this special film, Gilliam said. "Embarking into the world of a modern fantasy adventure I can't think of a better team working together."
Los Angeles based Mandate International is handling sales at AFM.
Arsenal's John Ptak and Dave Valleau from Infinity brokered the deal between Vince, the Gilliams and Hadida.
