She's Gotta Have It
MGM/Fox will put it out 1/15/08, with no details of extras. I know everyone was hoping for Criterion to rerelease this, but I certainly hope its better than the UK edition

From MGM Press Release:
DVD SPECIAL FEATURES
The film is presented in widescreen format in English Dolby Surround 5.1 with English, French and Spanish subtitles.
That's all, folks!

Of course I wish it was gonna be a Criterion. But otherwise, fuck special features, I am just glad to get it out on DVD. And sometimes, unless Criterion turned up some kick ass features I didn't love the film enough to really enjoy putting up 40 bucks for it. I would just expect that criterion would come up with some kick ass features, hence the disappointment.

Weird, I had a dream this morning that I got this on dvd.
I was hoping for a Criterion release, wish this at least had a commentary, Lee seems to love to do them.
If you are longing for some supplementary material,
this is great.

Didn't Spike Lee mentioned somewhere that he had finished the supplements and commentary for the Criterion release?

It may be mass hysteria, but I remember the same thing (or at least some kind of indication of special features being undertaken). I'd hoped for
Joe's Bed-Stuy Barbershop: We Cut Heads at the minimum.

I'm pretty sure of that, too. I think when they did the Malcolm X DVD??

thedigitalbits.com confirmed the extra-less release:
Also, not sure if I've posted this before, but MGM will be releasing Spike Lee's She's Gotta Have It on 11/7. This is apparently the first time the title has been available on DVD. Video is anamorphic widescreen with Dolby Digital 5.1 audio. There are no extras. SRP is $19.98.

Great reporting at the Bits there, on a news item possibly posted earlier for a title apparently not on DVD previously.

I have pre-ordered this out of excitement, but I am slightly dissapointed. For a film like this that shaped the independent filmmaking movement to be treated as such is a shame. There are so many sources that could be bled to give this DVD some fantastic features. Joe's Bed-Stuy Barber Shop is the first thing that comes to mind, followed by the Lee/Jordan Nike commercials that sparked so much controversy, a commentary by the always willing Spike Lee... I know there are NUMEROUS production stills out there, and I'm sure there is a wealth of behind the scenes stuff too...
I'm glad it is getting released, but they better make this transfer FAN FUCKING TASTIC, or I will be one extremely upset fan and consumer.

I really hope they clean it up and do a better job with it. I mean, I suspect the release of it has something to do with the resurrection of United Artists, so I'm hoping it wasn't just a grub for money idea, but that they really respect this film and felt it deserved a DVD release... I hope they will do something great with it.
EDIT: I just found this on eBay (
http://www.globalarray.net/user/image1f ... CCBack.jpg). Thought I'd post it for the heck of it... I mean, the laserdisc puts anything else to shame...
(The URL tags would not work for me...)

I am really not digging paying $14.99 for this when the CC was hinted at for so long and seemed like such a given..
Anyone have any insight as to whether this might be a "Days of Heaven" type situation where MGM just wants to get a crack at the action before they give it back to the CC? I know it's different studios.. The fact that it's totally bare-bones would seem to jibe with this idea.
Or maybe I'm just grasping at straws.

If you're not opposed to venturing into a Wal-Mart, I picked up a copy there for less than $7. I'm not much for extras anyway, so this was more than acceptable for a basic new release with a nice transfer.

So this will not become a criterion then? Am I wrong?

I'm hoping one come out later...I'm not sure about this stuff, but MGM has licensed films to Criterion, so why not this one? Maybe they wanted to release their own first,

I attended a Spike Lee lecture tonight and someone asked if there was anyway to see Joe's Bed-Stuy Barbershop or Last Hustle in Brooklyn, and Lee made it very clear that those were never to see the light of day again. Very entertaining talk, though the Q & A was a bit lacking, mostly due to dumb college students. By the time I came up with a question they were already wrapping it up and I missed my shot.

Did he say why those would never be seen?
Got She's Gotta Have it from Walmart, it has a Valentine's Day cover, part of a Valentine's Day promo, for $9.50ish,

He didn't say specifically, though by his tone it sounded like they were embarrassing to him.

Didn't "We Cut Heads" win the student Academy Award for best picture?

Yes it did. I suppose I understand his point, although I don't agree.
