Read all about it
here.
I really hope two things: new transfers on both films and more Universal Sirk on the way.

Another candidate for worst covers thread.

You really do have to admire the efficiency in providing two awful covers for the price of one.

Lana: Claudette, darling! Do I have something here, on my chin? Right here?
Claudette: Hmmm? No.
Lana: Cherie, you're not even looking. Right here, a zit maybe? Une petite blemishe perhaps?
Claudette (to herself): This woman is awfully close to me. I must have left the rest of my eyebrows around here somewhere.
Lana: Claudette! Yoo hoo! Right here, above this delicious pearl necklace. Anything?
Claudette: Wha... oh! No, nothing on your chin, but you do have a French poodle, a rodeo clown, and a very earnest maid growing out of your pompadour.
Lana: Well! I never! People who live in glass houses, my dear...
Claudette (to herself): Did I leave the oven on? Maybe the coffee maker?

Not only is the cover abominable, it appears to be in one of those damn Universal "book" things. Every single one of those cases I own has some sort of problem, from the case not snapping shut to the plastic trays falling right off the backing. I'm trying to be less anal about packaging these days, but I really hate those things.
However, if there are new transfers on this count me in.

Well, don't quote me on this but what other reason would be behind this re-release if the transfers aren't new? And God knows,
Imitation of Life (the Sirk) could use some improvement! It looks so drab!
My secret wish is that this will be the first of several Uni Sirk re-releases, with meticulously restored transfers, a la Uni Hitchcock. DVD whore that I am, I wouldn't mind double-dipping on them even though I have the UK set.

Meticulously restored Hitchcock's? Have you looked at
Vertigo and
Rear Window lately Lino? Especially in comparison with recent re-releases of
Funny Face and
To Catch a Thief? Sadly, I doubt Universal will be going to the trouble of new transfers for the Sirk. If so, you would think a little publicity about it would be at hand.
(Oh, and thanks David for the Claudette/Lana mental image. Just having pleasant trouble on shades of corset and knee highs.)

I just got around to reading a
review of this and apparently Universal did go to the trouble of new transfers for this release.
