New York Times dvd reviewer and long-time film critic Dave Kehr makes mention
here of a new Sacha Guitry boxed set just released by Gaumont in France.
It is titled,
Coffret Sacha Guitry: L'Age d'or 1936-1938. It contains 9 films from this period, and the transfers are said to be luminous. And, they are subtitled in both English and French according to Kehr, though the link does not specify it.

I'd wait until we have official confirmation first - we need more than Kehr's word, who could have been misinformed and French DVDs are notoriously non-English friendly. I saw this on the pre-releases before Christmas, but all sites - amazon.fr, fnac, alapage and dvd.fr - list it as NOT English friendly.
Indeed, if you check the Kehr piece he NEVER says they are English friendly, just says they have come out. For Francophones only.

I have the boxset and there are optional english subtitles on all films. The extras are not subtitled but the movies are.

Great news! Too bad the euro is absolutely killing the dollar right now, or I'd pick this up in a heartbeat.

On Dave Kehr's website, he
does mention inclusion of English subtitles, among other things. You have to click on the comments made by readers section, and one of his responses mentions this fact. Kehr actually has the box in his possession, so he ought know!
Nonetheless, Tom Peeping has been kind enough to corroborate Kehr's claims.

Great, happy to be in error. I'll have to make that a birthday treat a few months down the line. It'd be about £80 with postage.

Thanks for posting information on the boxset and confirming the subtitles everyone. I was just about to place an order for the individual films, but this is definitely a better deal. Incidentally, the Gaumont site did at least show confirmation on the English subtitles for the individual films (
Let's Make a Dream,
My Father Was Right, and
Story of a Cheat), but it's good to know that they all do have them.

Is this sucker OOP already? It's not currently listed on amazon.fr.

I ordered it when it was listed. After 10 days they cancelled it with a message that it was no longer available from their supplier. I've since ordered it from Alapage but I'm not hopeful.

It is listed on Amazon but from a vendor for 199 Euros.
It's missing in action on fnac and alapage but I've ordered it direct from the Gaumont site that doesn't mention it as unavailable; only delivery in 1-2 weeks so perhaps they're repressing. Wonder what the guy who's offering it at 199 E knows that we don't?

The Gaumont site indicates that it's being restocked, due February 5.

I also saw it on alapage, with a 2-9 day shipping window, so I ordered it.

Just so as we're out the same hymnbook, we are talking about the 9 dvd coffret and not the 8 dvd coffret aren't we ?? I still can't see the former on alapage.[/img]

It looks like the same set with different cover art: 9 films, 8 discs.

Just got my copy of the original release through - had to get via ebay and thus had to pay about £15 more than it would otherwise have been, but worth it. Fantastic stuff. I didn't want to get the reissue with the black and orange cover as it might be without Eng subs and seems to be less films.
If youc an track down the deleted original Dec 07 release, it's worth it.

Le Mot de Cambronne is a 34-minute short included as an extra on the same disc as Les Perles de la Couronne. Hence 9 films on 8 discs.

That picture on alapage predated the original date of issue. The Gaumont site still shows the original packaging so it might be a safe assumtion that the repress/restock is the same package. It would be somewhat disengenuous if it isn't.

I have had this on back order from Fnac for the past two weeks, and they cancelled it today. Hopefully, Gaumont really is repressing. It makes no sense that a big box set like this should go out of print after 2 months.

Alapage have cancelled my order. The reason given was that the supplier cannot supply it and no date of restocking is available.

This seems to be in stock again at fnac. Does fnac remove VAT for customers outside Europe?

I don't think so... but keep in mind, FNAC charges OUTRAGEOUSLY expensive shipping. I mean, the only option if you're in the US is basically 2-day Express so add another $25-30 to your total

FNAC does remove VAT (at least for shipments to the US), but if I remember correctly, there was always a little discrepancy (< €1.00) between how much they subtracted versus, say Amazon.fr or Alapage, so a little price comparison doesn't hurt.
Gaumont also took off VAT but charged me €24 for shipping, and I also had a couple of back and forth emails with them about their "identity verification" policy (they accepted an emailed statement confirming my address), so if you'd rather not deal too much with the language situation, FNAC might be a better bet.

Just in case there's still any uncertainty here.
I have just received the repress/ restock from Gaumont. It is the same original packaging -the striped coffret and discs in individual card gatefolds.
There are english subtitles as well as French for hard of hearing on all the features but neither on the supplements. Transfers are indeed luminous and it is a very handsome set all round. Supplements are beautiful/bountiful.

So
is this the repressing of the Guitry set, and/or the edition that people have reported ordering and then having cancelled by alapage? -

I hope so, as I reordered it from Alapage and it has now shipped. It seems to be in stock now (wasn't when I reordered).
