I hope that ugly pile of mostly useless junk in the photo above is not going to be reflective of the plain old Special Edition.
I much preferred Warner Home Video when they gave us a simple keep case with original movie poster art and a fitting price tag. I don't want any of that crap. Just give me the Don Siegel movie in a regular keep case with the classic one sheet cover.

That will be available for $20.97, but you'll have to do without the wallet with metal badge and removable laminated I.D. card. You know how stuff like that impresses the ladies.

Let's just hope they don't get "trigger happy" in the marketing department with the digital photoshop gun barrel art and stick with the orig. iconic movie poster for the 2-disc...
Who's feeling lucky?

Those are some of the worst fucking covers I've ever seen, it looks like fan art. What happened to Warner Bros?!

I wish they would've just used the original poster art like their old snapper case for the first movie, instead of the stupid "reproduction lobby card posters" that are a pointless waste of cardboard...
Their anniversary promotion is turning out to be mega lame. With the exception of some anticipated titles and most significantly, the announcement of their classics westerns collection, so far all we've seen are a bunch of repackagings and redeisgned box sets with shitty art work. Why fix something that ain't broken Warners??
They had the formula right already...

I'm a HUGE Eastwood fan (He's my favorite mainstream American director still working today) but I've never seen SUDDEN IMPACT. i had always heard that it was one of the worst of the Dirty Harrys, but I am interested in it as a film by Clint Eastwood. For those that know it, how does this film fit into the series, and more importantly, Eastwood's oeuvre writ large?

Yeah, this is really disconcerting. Warner used to be the one studio consistently respectful of original key art.

Those covers are terrible. Dirty Harry seems to be suffering from the same disembodied-hand-holding-a-gun affliction that plauged Jodie Foster on the
cover of
The Brave One.

I actually think it was the last good one of the series, though by no means is it the first film or
Magnum Force (my favorite of the series). Without giving anything away, it would have been a more apt farewell to the character than
The Dead Pool (which Clint only did as a favor to Warner Bros. for putting out the less commercial
Bird). As far as how it fits into Clint's filmography as a director, I'm not sure. I can say that the two highlights for me is Harry's rant on hot dogs and the famous "Make My Day" scene. More than the line itself, the scene is shot and cut perfectly to get the tension a scene like that should provide.

I really enjoyed Sudden Impact, myself. I think The Dead Pool is probably the only one I wasn't into really.

The Enforcer is really less memorable (for me, anyway) than The Dead Pool. At least the latter was memorable for a few things (namely the first big film Jim Carrey was in, despite it being a two-scene role. Also has early roles for Liam Neeson and Patricia Clarkson) and had some good, but typical cliches for a Reagan-era action film.

I only bought the Don Siegel film because it was the only one that interested me but I do remember seeing on of the later sequels on TV as a kid and even then it looked like a bad generic 80's cop movie. Should I at least rent Magnum Force?

Well, the covers are definitely suggestive to a degree that seems wildly inappropriate. If I'd been the designer it never would have even occurred to me to have a gun barrel probing a bullet hole in a window on every single cover. Very odd. This isn't something that happens in all of these movies, is it? I think I've only ever seen the first one.

I must be the only one on the forum who utterly loathes Sudden Impact and thinks its the worst of the series (I find Dead Pool to be mindless, unpretentious fun; the toy car is a hoot!).
I really love Eastwood as a director, but this is during what I think is his slump, cemented by films like Firefox and Pale Rider. Don Siegel and James Fargo's efforts as directors were kinetic and lively (perhaps the strongest aspect of moral outrage towards the series... but I tend to be forgiving of the films). However, Impact really left an awful taste in my mouth, and not the kind that stems from Eastwood's best work. I think the deck is stacked the highest against the villains in this one, because they're so damn lowdown and evil. The graphic nature of the crimes, as shown by Eastwood, doesn't help, because it leaves no room to breathe, no room for a little introspection. Perhaps that isn't what Dirty Harry is about, but that's what I associate with Eastwood as a director. Eastwood usually has a fantastic sense of how to convey the moral ambiguity of murder and law enforcement, but he really dropped the ball with this one; it just seems to take too much pleasure in offing everbody, whereas Siegel at least seemed to feel a certain distaste for Harry killing in the first one.
That being said, its probably the nicest looking of all the films, but i think its just the most morally bankrupt. I was very disappointed in it.

I really only have reverence for the first two films. Everything else, though they had their moments*, really don't hold up. I like Magnum Force a lot more than the first one, actually. It's a pretty direct response to the criticism of the previous film, it puts Harry in direct conflict with his actions as a vigilant detective (not totally unlike what Nolan & Co. would later do in The Dark Knight) by putting him against an army of even more vigilant cops. There's also some great back and forth between Clint and Hal Holbrook's character, leading to a spectacular climax at the end.
*I watched the car chase in The Dead Pool last night on AMC, and still got a kick out of it. The really funny thing is that the RC death on wheels is directly modeled after McQueen's car in Bullitt if I'm not mistaken.

I finally got around to watching the new DVD and realized that it was the first time I've revisited the orig. film since I was a kid... I completely forgot how much this movie SUCKS!
This is absolutely one of the stupidest movies ever and if it wasn't for the gorgeous daylight photography and location shots of the bay area or my penchant for early 70's films, I'd dump it on eBay. Thank god I didn't bother with any of the sequels!
