I've always been meaning to ask:

At film festivals in France, Germany, Italy, etc. do they have two sets of subtitles on the prints off all the films showing?

i.e. Cannes - french and english subtitles (for non-french, non-english language films)?
Or do they have separate screenings- one with french subs, another with english.
Or, are there simply no english subs at all for non-english language films?

P.S. some of you may know about a system that utilizes a second digital projector to project custom subs on to the bottom of the cinema screen, thus allowing any country/language to show films without getting custom prints! I witnessed this while watching 'The Bride Wore Black' in London at the Institut Francais! :)

Great line-up. I'm excited in particular that Terence Davies has made another film... apparently a documentary this time? Does anyone know more about it?

The only real disappointment is that the new Claire Denis film(s) didn't make it, but maybe it's just a question of completion.

all of the major film festivals pretty much require subtitles in the language that they are held... Cannes (and many of the other big fests) also electronically projects English subs if the film is not in English or French (or the language of the country where the festival is held)

You can generally find the information on the official websites of the film festival under rules and regulations for submitting films.

Great line-up, though. Egoyan, Garrel, Desplechin, and so on. Much better than last year's line-up, at least from what I remember.

1. No, it has nothing to do with AGE OF TATTOO, which is a different project.
2. 24 CITY stars Joan Chen, Lu Liping and Zhao Tao. It's a docudrama.

It's his docu on Liverpool and his relationship to the city. Narrated by the director himself.

Looks promising. Jia, Ceylan, Davies and the Dardennes should be able to be relied on to deliver, and averse as I am to portmanteau films, the Bong / Gondry / Carax combination seems irresistable. Plus Ashes redux, at last! And another Dvortsevoy is always cause for celebration!

Let´s hope this is the film they announce. The world will be a much better place the day a Christopher Lambert film wins the Golden Palm.

Wow - some really cool up-and-comers (Eric Khoo, Kornel Mundruczo) with films in competition. An exciting lineup.

Actually, it's hard to imagine a fest which, on paper anyway, would look better than the one in '07. We had new films by Hou, Van Sant, Sokurov, Tarr, Ferrara, Reygadas, Breillat, the Coens, Schnabel, Akin, Kusturica and Zvyagintsev. Not to mention the estimable Palm winner. Still, obviously this is a subjective call.

And having said that, I'm pretty pleased with the line up myself. I'll admit that many of the directors are unknown quantities to me and therefore I can't judge, but I am certainly excited by the prospect of discovering new talent (or at least new to me).

My only disappointments are the absences of the aforementioned Denis, Hernandez's Rabioso sol, rabioso cielo and Angelopoulos' Dust of Time, all of which I expected to see listed in the roster.

For the time being, and sight unseen of course, I'm pulling for the Ceylan, Martel and Egoyan in roughly that order.
