I've tried hunting down the film a couple of years ago when I read the original comic and the recent re-introduction of the character and got interested in what went wrong. I've never seen the movie, but many of my friends have told me that it is a

Holy Hell, if a Lucasfilm ever deserved a Special Edition, here it is.
I remember seeing this in second grade, as a teacher showed it for us. Everyone cheered when he said "Next week, we will watch Howard The Duck...." and before he could finish the sentence, there was a huge unanimous cheer from everyone,... except me.
I thought "What the hell is Howard the Duck?"
Saw it the next week, and well, didn't leave much of a mark on me. There was a lot of Leah Thompson cleavage as I remember, and that's about it.

It's finally happened. George Lucas has sold his soul to the devil by releasing the one film he has no business of associating himself with. Apparently the fans will start lining up in droves just to get their hands on their personal copy of Howard the Duck. Think of it as probably the Tickle Me Elmo or (even worse yet) the Cabbage Patch Doll craze for the cult set. Lock your doors. Come March, no one is safe from these crazed fans. (Insert your own Howard the Duck joke here.)

I'm the only fan of Howard the Duck, thanks Universal for releasing the dvd for me.
It's a good movie, it might just be too absurd for people to take seriously. Howard looks silly, he's a duck, but he has human emotions, fears, humor, sexuality, etc. I take him seriously as a character, but the rest of the movie undermines him, forcing him to be and act like the silly character that he looks like, despite how he acts and what he says. He eventually accepts it, saves the world, and gets the girl. Minorities in the entertainment industry had/have to do this, the film doesn't say that this is right, it's just an observation.

its not that its bad,.....its boring
..boring as
duck.
and clunky, too, into the bargain.
imagine yourself as a front-seat passenger in a car where the driver repeatedly has difficulty changing gears.
Thats how clunky it is.

Indeed; it's a wonderful John Barry score, one of his best, and the best part of the movie by far, along with Phil Tippett's stop-motion monster at the end (which puts most CGI to shame).
Yes, after the opening twenty minutes (too bad they didn't film more "Duckland" scenes),
Howard the Duck doesn't become bad so much as it becomes really boring, and most of the acting is more-than reasonably corny (the director doesn't seem to know what to do with Lea Thompson, who struggles with acting comedic and "quick"), though the monster at the end is an exceptionally bizarre animated creation that you really can't take your eyes off of. A young Tim Robbins has fun.
It's a lot better than the
Star Wars prequels.
