Anyone else watching Eastbound & Down? It stars Danny McBride and the last 3 episodes have been directed by David Gordon Green. How much you like the show will probably depend on if you find Danny McBride as a narcissistic insecure failed greasy haired baseball player funny, and I thought tonight's episode was the funniest of the season so far.

I love this show. It is going into such weird and wonderful places. I'm glad Jody Hill is letting Green direct most of it - he's a much better director.

I really wanted to love this show, but I couldn't make it past the first episode. McBride's character just seems like a more extreme, less funny version of Coach McGuirk from Home Movies.

I was ambivalent about the first season, though it did have some great scenes, but I was actually pleasantly surprised by the first episode of the new season. The show felt much more comfortable with itself and seemed to have more of a coherent goal for Kenny. Of course, it couldn't all be great, as Deep Roy apparently took lessons from the Ken Jeong school-of-comedy, where you must suck out all the humor of your lines by going straight past "hilariously over-the-top" and right into "annoyingly excessive".

Finally a thread on this show! I loved the first season...Danny McBride plays the asshole washed-up ball player perfectly (and I'd venture to say that the character is not that far from the reality of the egocentric professional athlete). It took me a while to get into it because the main character is so damn unlikeable, but the constant one liners were funny enough to make me a fan. On the other hand, I'm not sure how far the series can go with the same jokes and gags, and the first episode of the new season fell pretty flat for me. But I'm willing to give a chance...if it's half as funny as the first season I'll be watching it.

Agreed. I thought that entire scene was probably the best sequence in the entire series.

Tonight's episode was approximately ten times funnier than the season premiere, and definitely the funniest to date. The introduction music juxtaposed with the disinterested faces in the crowd was amazing, Kenny's multitude of speeches (particularly the 'there is a 'u' in 'cunt'' one) were absolutely hilarious, and basically anything involving Stevie was terrific. And I forgot how laugh-out-loud creative the "previously on" segments are, incredible choices of lines and moments.

Last night's Eastbound and Down is easily the most absurd episode so far, thanks to the last five minutes. Also, the episode included this great line: "I've got something for you. It's a Friends DVD. Season 6, Criterion Collections"

I'm just going to pretend that everything after Will Ferrell showed up didn't actually happen. I can handle deeply offensive, but not when it's pointlessly unfunny.

The ending of episode three was really unsettling. I realize it was ridiculously funny in it's way, but I was chilled to the bone by Sudekis' performance in the background of Kenny at the stereo for some reason.

Another Criterion reference on tonight's Eastbound and Down… and an awesome laserdisc line!

HBO sez what the heck and renews this even though it already ended

HBO always wanted to renew it, the question mark was whether Hill/McBride/et al. wanted to go on. There's more than one interview where they say the third season was it for the foreseeable future. So it's a little unnerving to see McBride backtracking on that, though his use of the word "epilogue" implies that this is really really the end of the story, for real.

Did I see the same 3rd season as this guy? I thought it was by far the best of the three seasons so far.

It was my favorite season as well. The show goes beyond the offensive, cringe-inducing humor into some very macabre territory that I hadn't expected, the aforementioned Sudekis moment being a particular standout.

Jody Hill and Danny McBride to collaborate on a new HBO series, Vice Principals, starring McBride for 18 episodes, presumably meaning three seasons of 6 episodes per.

I wonder what happened to Ben Best? There's been very little speculation as to why he basically fell off the face of the Earth after a couple brief appearances on Season 2 of Eastbound and Down, and doesn't appear to be collaborating with Hill and McBride any longer (or doing anything else, for that matter).

It's not much, but from this article last year:

Hill and McBride created Eastbound with Best (who appeared in the first two seasons as the charming weirdo Clegg, a spray-paint-huffing bartender/drug-dealer), but no longer work with him. When asked why, they provide a polite “No comment.”

Yeah, it's very strange that there's quite literally no information about what happened with Best - you'd think that even if there was just a falling out with Hill and McBride, he'd be getting work elsewhere. Hope everything's okay with him.

Walter Goggins though absolutely steals the show underplaying the whole thing with this effete malice. It's a mild stretch from what he's been doing lately though the preview to the next episode and the end to this one suggests he's going to stick to something more familiar for the rest of the show.

Last night's episode was hysterical.

I just watched the first couple episodes of Vice Principals. Awful show. Walter Goggins deserves much better.
