Mastering problem with R4 Vivre sa vie

My copy has a problem with the commentary track, which cuts out at the end of the film in the middle of a word, in the middle of a quotation which Adrian Martin is reading. I've emailed Madman about this, but haven't yet heard back. In the meantime, I wonder if anyone else has noticed this, or if anyone has a non-defective copy. The commentary was the entire reason I bought this in R4, so I'm a little annoyed about this.

My order is still "awaiting despatch". I'm sorry to hear about the glitch, and will certainly check my disc... if and when it arrives.

I bought it for the same reason, and yes, it rudely cuts out on my copy as well. Maybe Mr. Martin will be kind enough to print the entire quote at Rouge one of these days.

I confess I didn't look that closely at the image while I was listening to the commentary, but while it was clearly made from very good materials, my first impression was that there was an excessive amount of edge enhancement. I'd have to look closer to confirm this. Apart from that it did look pretty good.

I'm fond of the beautiful transfer for the R2 Nouveaux Pictures release. Is the Madman a port? Be warned, though: ingrained subtitles and no commentary.

the film ends before he can finish his quote and Madman clearly was too busy getting someone's eight year old newphew to play around in Photoshop for the DVD Cover to add an extra five seconds of dead screen to accommodate the rest of the quote

btw the commentary is one of the most well-researched and informative Godard-related commentaries I've heard, it's well worth the listen.

Adrian Martin is Australia's best film critic, in my opinion. He also wrote the liner notes on the the R4 Bresson films released by Accent - Pickpocket, Trail of Joan of Arc and L'Argent as well as The Short Films of Francois Ozon DVD which is a great collection of Ozon's early short films (his best work IMHO) including the wonderful Summer Dress and See The Sea.

Agree, but the thick australian accent made it a bit difficult to listen to (sorry to all australians on this forum.)

Having seen the Nouveaux, I stuck with the Fox Lorber 1) for the removable subtitles, and 2) because of some oddities in the Nouveaux transfer: it seems hazy down the left side, and - now, I don't know the technical name for this, but you know that thing that happens with certain DVDs where, in motion, fine detailed masses like hair and fabrics go mushy? Well, it does that. I'd be interested to hear if the Madman has the same transfer as the Nouveaux, too.

Oh, and are the subtitles removable?

I've had a reply from Madman:

"Thanks for your email. I have just received information this morning
that there is indeed an error affecting the commentary track. The error
has been corrected internally and will be included on subsequent
releases (print runs) of the disc.

"Unfortunately there can be quite some time between runs but I am
checking this and will keep your email details so that I may contact you
when a new disc is available. Due to the upcoming break a print run may
not occur until the new year is well underway, so please feel free to
check in with me at a future time."

I'm satisfied with their response and look forward to receiving a corrected disc in the future.

So are Madman going to replace your DVD or are they just going to contact you when the new one is available? They don't mention in the above email about replacing you with a NEW one. If they did that to everyone then they will lose a lot of money on the title.

It will be good to know as I have the same DVD but I haven't watched yet with the commentary.

I have the Ma Mere disc as well. My problem with that film is when I view it on my computer, it plays it in 4:3 aspect ratio and not the film's 1.85.

No excuse for it but I would think it's a result of authoring and releasing so many titles every month. They churn them out without getting a test disc done and checked before final replication. They need to check the test disc before each run but who is going to watch every second of every test disc including extra features. Anyone here?

I ordered this during the extended blow-out sale (BUT IT HAS YET TO ARRIVE!!!!). How much time is left in the film when the commentary cuts out? Is it a metter of seconds...minutes??? Any time is too much, clearly, but as this seems to be the disk I will be getting (at least I assume it will arive some velvet morning when I'm straight), I kind of want to know what I am in for here... Any feedback would be much appreciated.

probably about ten seconds. the commentator tells the listener that he will finish his commentary by reading a quote, and gets most of the way through it before the film ends

This is too funny. Yet to listen to the commentary myself, but surely they can just mail out a postcard with the finished quote to those who are desperate, or even post what Mr. Martin had to say on their website.

Quality control though is a major issue - I doubt they actually have any besides handing out freebies to staff a week or two before release.

I just purchased a copy of "Vivre sa Vie" from Ezydvd, and the commentary on my copy still cuts out as described in the thread.
I was hoping, based on the age of this discussion and posted response from Madman that the issue had been fixed.
Does anyone have any updates?
