Davis Dvd is reporting that the Heiress is finally comming to DVD under this label. Aparently All Quiet on the Westernfront and Going my Way are also being re-release on the same day.

From DVDTimes:
Universal Studios Home Video have announced four titles as Wave 1 of a new Universal Cinema Classics line. Due on 6th February 2006 priced at $14.98 SRP each are: All Quiet on the Western Front (1930), Arabian Nights (1942), Going My Way (1944) and The Heiress (1949).

All titles are presented in 1.33:1 Full Frame with English DD2.0 Mono audio and optional English SDH and French subtitles. Extras include introductions and original trailers.
Seems to me, they took a hint or two from Fox. The big news however is that this could mean an eventual release of Cobra Woman.

This is very encouraging news about the new line, epecially as other companies such as Fox seem to be slowing way down with "classic" releases. In particular, I'm very happy to see All Quiet on the Western Front get the re-release it deserves. I wonder what the runtime will be, compared to the R2/R4 (see discussion of this complicated mess here).

I saw ARABIAN NIGHTS this year in NY Film Forum's Summer Swashbucklers series. A quite outrageous and bizarre piece of Hollywood camp, very entertaining.

Amazon lists this All Quiet on the Western Front DVD with a runtime of 132 minutes. Oh well, it's sure to be a big improvement over the old R1 release, anyway.

I think that I am the only person who prefers Delbert Mann's 1979 version of All Quiet on the Western Front. The 1930 is terrific, but it is stilted at times. The '79 was shot by John Coquillon (Cross of Iron) and it got Borgnine in it. I rest my case.

Yeah, but what movie from that era didn't?

Seriously, I've always felt that some time during the filming of Bad Day at Black Rock, Walter Brennan must have handed the role of "most ubiquitous actor" over to Borgnine.

So glad I decided not to pony up for the silly Scarface set just to get the original.

No, that prestigious honor still belongs to Double Indemnity. More than eight years lapsed between the day I bought the crappy, Image-licensed version and the day the special edition was released. Coincidentally(?), both titles belong to Universal.

I agree that Universal should be ashamed that the original Scarface was only available in R1 for so long in that silly box set. However, for people with region-free players the Hawks film has been available for some time now from the UK (among others) on a very inexpensive DVD with an excellent transfer.

The alternate ending has been on the old region 1 disc.

I have it but unfortunately can't comment as I haven't seen the movie... (blasphemy)

I guess No Man of Her Own is the 1932 Carole Lombard/Clark Gable vehicle, since it's from Universal...the unrelated noir/soap film of the same title (1950) starring Barbara Stanwyck is from Paramount. Or does Universal own the old Paramount library? Does anyone know for sure which one it is? I've been waiting for the Stanwyck one for a while.

Edit: Whoops! I just checked the DVDTimes link. It's the Lombard version. Darn.
