Warner Home Video has announced The Departed which stars Leonardo Dicaprio, Matt Damon, and Jack Nicholson. The Martin Scorsese directed film will be available to own in single ($28.98) and double-disc ($34.99) editions from the 13th February. Each will include a 2.40:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer, and English Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround track. The only extra on the single-disc will be the theatrical trailer. The two-disc special edition will include that, along with nine additional scenes with introductions by Martin Scorsese, a Story of the Boston Mob featurette, and a Creating Criminal Cultures featurette.

Boooo-urns indeed! Since they have the covers up, including the back, it looks like those are the final specs. I've come to expect Scorsese commentaries as a matter of course, and I had hoped that Richard Schickel's Scorsese on Scorsese might show up here as well. For a two-disc set approaching Criterion prices, those are some pretty skimpy supplements.
Hmm....given The Departed will probably be pulling in some Oscar noms if not some wins, I think Warner's is planning a double dip, with this release hitting shelves in time for Oscar season. I just can't see how Scorsese and the cast didn't record a commentary for this.
Or, maybe they're saving all the goodies for the HD DVD release....that alone would probably prompt me to buy a player.
Yeah, I'm not seeing very much difference between the Russian cover and the 2-Disc Special Edition cover other than the translation of the title. Since language is the only real difference between the two covers I can only assume Barmy is a damn dirty commie-bastard!
If Scorsese wins the Oscar, they'll probably stack the dvd with extras. Like someone else said on the linked site, didn't they have someone tail everything for the dvd documentary? I'm sure they did, and I'll wait for that...
One major feature is still in question. dvdaf and some places list "Scorsese on Scorsese" on the R1 disc, yet back cover shots do not have this on there.
Yet, now the UK R2 claims to have the Scorsese documentary. Already pre-ordered the R1, maybe I should cancel it being unsure
In Canada, the steelbook 2-Disc edition is an exclusive to Future Shop. Best Buy has an exclusive 2-Disc edition with a large booklet of the original script.

Is it the original script or the shooting script? I'm not really too sure I see the advantage of having the script in such a small booklet, especially since it looks like it isn't secure in the packaging - merely squished between the cover and the DVD case. Anyway, when faced with the choice (for some strange reason they decided to have a Future Shop and a Best Buy 100 meters away from one another here in Minnesota North) I went with the steelbook, since it has the cover art I enjoy...
... and with that mention of cover-art and packaging, I think I'll stick my head in the oven, since I'm behaving like a DVD-collecting-geek.
I'm pretty sure it said "Original Script" on the packaging. I haven't decided which one to buy myself. I might just hold off and get an HD version after I update my equipment.
So far what it seems: Region 1 2 disc standard DVD is the best way to go.
The Region 3 HK has DTS, but spreads out the movie on 2 discs, and has completely different extra material, and no Scorsese on Scorsese. The HD is missing the Scorsese documentary too.

Same experience here - that's the first time I've encountered that particular design and I hope it's the last. Other than that, the tin is pretty neat.
For a Special Edition dvd, here's what I wish: Scorsese solo commentary, cast commentary involving DiCaprio, Damon, Nicholson, Wahlberg, Sheen, Farmiga, Winstone and Scorsese. 3rd commentary involving writer William Monahan, Howard Shore, Michael Ballhaus, Thelma Schoonmaker and Scorsese. And maybe toss in a four-hour making-of, on the set documentary. Keep Scorsese on Scosese and make it a three disc. Oh, and Oscar highlight clips, of course...
