Actually, CD-Wow were the first online retailer i noticed to have it up for pre-order...right at the end of January would you believe!!

Have to admit i'm not going to jump the gun on this even though it's one of my most eagerly anticipated releases..period!! Will hang on to see what Wild Side in France may have up their sleeves as i can live without the R1 CD's but the possibility of additional interviews/featurettes may be a bit hard to resist should any appear on the R2 France release.

cd-wow.net (the German portal) has the R1 Anchor Bay set for 44.99 Euros, and the upcoming R2 variant for 87.75 Euros (and also this will be released 14 days later). Ridiculous, I'd say. At least now I know which one to buy! And I just can't wait....

Anbody know anything about that Tarot short that's being included in all these boxes? Can't seem to find that anywhere online, and some places refer to it as a short while others call it a featurette.

- Midnight Movie (1h 33) : documentary on the phenomenon, which started with El Topo in 1970.
I saw this about a year ago and it was pretty interesting (mostly for the interviews) as it focuses on Six midnight movies that are now cult favorites (El Topo, Night of the Living Dead, Pink Flamingoes, The Harder They Come, Rocky Horror Picture Show and Eraserhead)
The interviews with Jodorowsky, Lynch and Waters are great (especially Waters)... I also love the quote (from whom, I do not remember) that went something along the lines of: Eraserhead was the only film that had to be a midnight movie (meaning that the others were victims of circumstance, and that Lynch's nightmare was meant to be seen in the dead of night.)

It is now up for pre-order at DVDPlanet for a lovely $29.97 (that includes shipping for those in the US) and DVDPlanet regularly ships their pre-orders early. I think it is the lowest total price so far!

Oh, to find it you have to type in "jodorwsky" they forgot an "o"

Just out of curiosity: how did you find that? I tried every spelling possible and nothing comes up.

DVDPlanet's Director Mark Harrill posted it in a thread at DVDTalk where he fields questions pertaining to the site.

Thanks for the heads up zombeaner. I got mine preordered, and am getting more excited by the day waiting to see both films for the first time at the WI film festival. Hopefully they can release another set with Tusk, Santa sange, and The Rainbow Thief if this one sells well enough.

Wow, did not know of the documentary but those are the same films featured in Jonathan Rosenbaum and J. Hoberman's book of the same name. A good read for those inclined. Definitely gonna have to check out the doc.

So, while browsing deep discount, I found their description of El Topo:

One of the goriest westerns ever made, this sadistic cult classic also features plenty of nudity and sexual situations. John Ford, it ain't.

not even close to John Ford... or the inspired violence of Peckinpah for that matter as far as the film goes, it's pretty much a bloody mess (in content and technique)

(I just saw it after years of waiting and was greatly dissappointed... although I did see it in a 35mm print and not a digital projection)

it seemed about 4 hours long, and I was never really sure if it was supposed to be funny or not... although it did have some interesting ideas (my main problem was that Jodorowsky seems to treat film like theatre... it's actually a bit annoying... as I dislike theatre with a passion)
I guess I'll get really high before seeing Holy Mountain.

miless, i kinda had the same impression when I watched El Topo from a bad ebay bootleg i bought years ago. but i was mesmerized by Holy Mountain. I even enjoyed Santa Sangre even more for it seemed to combine the subversive and mind blowing moments of Holy Mountain, with a more concise plot. Not that I'm exactly adverse to films without a plot, I just find them harder to get into.

Maybe this has been covered before and I just missed it in the thread, but what's the status of Santa Sangre? I came into possession of a VHS copy this weekend and noticed it was released by Republic, was it a title that Paramount still owns or is it one that was bought by Lionsgate? It's probably my favorite film by Jodorowsky because it's a little more reined in.

I had the pleasure of seeing The Holy Mountain projected from a 35mm print a few weeks back, it looked fantastic and gave me very high expectations for the box set. Seeing it in the theater was probably the most overwhelming movie experience I've ever had, it was total sensory overload.

I had a dream last night that this set was cancelled. Two more weeks to go and still no reviews. This is not even up at the Anchor Bay site. Why isn't anybody making any noise?

Glenn Erickson posted this snippet today: "Just received Anchor Bay's Alejandro Jodorowski box yesterday, and will need a few days to sort it out ... I hope they still play well, without a certain sickly-sweet smoke in the theater."

Without the smell? Hell, there should have been a bonus disc that's just weed pressed into circle form, and then you get to tear it up/wrap it up and ration it over the course of the set.

I'd buy that for a dollar!

A dollar?!!? Hell if it's good, i'll pay $50 for 3.5 grams. Saw El Topo at the Wisconsin Film Festival tonight along with The Holy Mountain. The new prints look great, i was hoping to hop on here and hear that people have received their sets from DVD Planet, but no word for anyone else yet either? After tonight I want to start watching THM on a daily basis.

DVDTalk Review

Two of the transfers (La Cravate and Fando Y Lis) are not flagged for progressive scan playback and Fando Y Lis is not anamorphic, but those flaws seem to be the only bad news.

Does anyone know the AOR of "Fando and Lis"? If it is 1.66, it would be understandable and probably even better to make it non-anamorphic, if it's 1.85 it's a real shame that they letter-boxed it...
But anyway, the screen shots of all these films look fabulous and I can't wait to get that set into my greedy hands...
