'Sho o suteyo machi e deyou' ('Throw Away Your Books, Rally in the Streets'), dir. Terayama Shuji, 1971. (Japan, R2 NTSC).

I love this shot. The cameraman puts down the camera and then lights up a joint with some school-kids. People in the background stop and stare through most of it.

Image
The sign the kid is holding says "If you feel angry, punch this". And yes, the punching bag is a big old cock.

Image from a Robert Crumb comic that Terayama inserts into the film. I wonder if he got the idea from 'Scorpio Rising', which was a popular film at one of the ATG theatres. They even named the underground theatre after the film (Sasori-za).

Those stills look great. Thanks, Mr the dancing kid. But I couldn't find the disc listed at cdjapan. Any hints as to under what name they're hiding it?

That Raro Burroughs set is riddled with major major ghosting of the worst possible kind-- as bad as the Milestone PHANTOM OF THE OPERA or the image BERLIN. Be forwarned.

Awesome.

I guess it is futile to hope that the episode with Gloria Jean cut from the film and used as basis for the mediocre Destiny has been restored into the film?

Now bring on The imposter.

It starts with the discovery of the drowned body, so no, that opening segment hasn't been restored. I remember reading that Duvivier liked that episode the best and felt it had been cut by Universal because it didn't have a big enough star to match the other episodes.

Futile question probably, but this release would not be carrying English subs by any chance?

Interesting. The colors seem really off in the second image, though. Some sort of filter? Experimental Agfa stock?
I saw Yoshishige Yoshida's Akitsu onsen the other day, same thing in some shots: blue skies end up more grey/brown.

The color fidelity of Uchida's film seemed to fluctuate from scene to scene. Not sure what the cause is -- but I would bet the film stock used had a lot to do with this.

Re Aussie "Sheltering Sky"... is the image stretched horizontally on the DVD as they appear in those stills?

Is this the VellaVision disc from 2002? I'd really like to get this one, even though those caps aren't exactly spectacular.
