Mala Noche, from mk2, and why hasn't anyone mentioned this yet?

Janus may own it, Plexifilm still wants to sell it, but I might die before all that ever materializes, so....you win again, France.

I have been wanting to see this film for a long time. I was going to watch this in when MK2 released it theatically about 6 months ago in Paris but was too busy with work. I'm quite curious and excited about this film... I wonder which Van Sant will turn up... :-k

FYI, a new print of Mala Noche was struck by Janus for theatrical release later this year, so a Criterion is almost certainly on the horizon. If you don't mind waiting, it's probably a good idea.

Is MALA NOCHE any good though? I love LAST DAYS, but very little else from Van Sant, although MY OWN PRIVATE IDAHO is ok.

It's probably my favourite Van Sant, but it's been so long since I've seen it, it's hard to be sure. Its only real rivals for me are Drugstore Cowboy and Elephant. Very much in the tradition of Cowboy and Idaho, but much rougher: a film of great textures.

That is 100% correct! Plus the director is treated with much greater respect in France than he is here (being the US) so likely there will be some notable extras.

I too received this today. It is a very strong package all round, exactly as expected from MK2.

The film itself is a pretty faithful adaptation of the Curtis novella. Very much worth seeing...
