I can deal with that to get the extra content on Vincent Price. I named my son after him, he's one of my heroes.Jameson281 wrote:The new discs are flippers as well.zombeaner wrote:I'll happily trade in my current flippers of the Vincent Price movies for the new ones

Man oh man am I looking forward to that Vincent Price set, I'm glad I was lazy on picking up the previously released two-fers (except for the Phibes set). I just wonder if the Witchfinder General solo disc will have cool cover art, hopefully I won't be missing out on much. And I just can't resist the bonus disc - much like Zombeaner, Vincent Price is a hero of mine.

Just for reference, here's that comparison of the UK and French transfers of Witchfinder.
Believe me when I say that the MGM transfer blows the French one away. The colours are lush, but not over-saturated; there is more detail; the brightness and contrast levels are spot on. I am an ardent admirer of John Coquillon's work as a cinematographer and it is thrilling to finally see his gorgeous and highly expressive naturalistic lighting done full justice.

My guess is yes, I just wish they'd re-release the OOP titles from MM so I don't have to pay exorbitant prices. I want both Dr Goldfoot films, Angry Red Planet, and whatever else is left. All of the OOP Price films except Goldfoot I have already. I een managed to track down a copy of Planet of the Vampires for $2.50 a few weeks back. Many of the Corman/Poe films are OOP I believe, which leads me to believe they won't be reissued in a new set. All of the films in the current VP set are in print.Cinephrenic wrote:So will there be a Vincent Price collection 2? They have the previous Corman films they could easily put together.

Yes, that's unfortunate. It isn't simply edited, either, but freeze-framed and censored with black blotches. It's a fucking abortion. But perhaps it is the case that Fox don't possess an uncut 35mm element (of adequate quality). They don't own the UK rights and it may be the case that the uncut 35mm camera negative resides somewhere over here, though Vipco's uncut DVD looks like it is from an old full-frame analogue video master. The uncut version is far more enjoyable than the cut version, which ultimately comes across as being like a lightweight TV movie. It is in actuality - I feel - a dark comedy, whereas the cuts make it seem like a light horror comedy. I'll reserve judgement on Fox.THX1378 wrote:Just some FYI for those getting Tales/Vault. Vault is the cut US version, it's not the uncut UK version that I've been waiting for years to see. Big disappointment on Fox that they didn't put the uncut version on there.

This has got me stymied: I've already bought the disc, but I could still return it...Is it worth it to see the films still, despite the problems with the version utilized for Vault? I doubt I'd ever get another region release of either, so I guess this would be my only shot at the two f them...Person wrote:Yes, that's unfortunate. Excellent call, Person: I had a great time with Crypt, and can't wait to get to Vault, regardless of the censoring (as MarkClark says, at worst it's like a supplement to Crypt, which, given the price, is forgivable- I'd rather support Fox/MGM for bringing the Midnite line back than for making an error that they perhaps couldn't remedy in the first place given the rights situation). Almost has me wishing the horror anthology would make a comeback...Person wrote:To return it would be hasty, as Crypt is awesome. I like Vault - it's fun and weird, but Crypt is real class. I have been acquiring the collected E.C. hardback collections over the past few months. Beautiful reproductions.

I didn't think it was worth starting a new thread for, but From Beyond was a big surprise for me. I've never been too big a Re-Animator fan, but, to me, this was very, very enjoyable. Part of it might have been the Crampton/Combs role reversal between the two films, but even beyond that it's a treat. The DVD is excellent, with just the right number of special features (including a very fun commentary), a solid transfer, and some nice additions in terms of cut material that's been restored. Definitely worth it, unlike the new ROTLD disc, which is patently unnecessary for anyone with the previous release.

My sentiments exactly. I actually can't stand Re-Animator. I had a great time watching From Beyond and I suspect that is due to it being uncut. Considering that the camera negative was junked and the trims had to be retimed to a workprint, it looks gorgreous. Ken Foree (the original Dawn of the Dead) is a hoot and Barbara Crampton is incredibly sexy, both as the formal 80s professional and as well in fetish gear.Cronenfly wrote:I didn't think it was worth starting a new thread for, but From Beyond was a big surprise for me. Is The Burning worth it? The Bob/Harvey Weinstein involvement, as well as young Jason Alexander, Holly Hunter, et al., plus Savini gore effects (the MGM R1 being the first uncut widescreen release, too) and its Video Nasties rep make it seem like not a bad buy even if it blows at $10 or less, and with supplements, even.

If you don't already own Return of the Living Dead, I highly recommend buying it now. From Beyond is one of Gordon's best films and definitely a standout as one of the more unique horror movies of the 80's. I'm probably going to pick up Witchfinder General due to it's reputation. Unfortunately, so far, I haven't found any of these titles locally and I live in freaking Los Angeles!!!ranaing83 wrote:Of this new spate of midnight madness releases, what is worth purchasing and what isn't? I'm getting Witchfinder General and Tales From the Crypt/Vault of Horror, but aside from those, I'm not as familiar with some of the other films and I'd appreciate any recommendations.
