Drunken Angel looks like an anime TV show, and though I wasn't expecting Berlin Alexanderplatz's cover to look like it does, I'm pleasantly surprised.FSimeoni wrote:Berlin Alexanderplatz is amazing, one of the best Criterion covers I've seen for a while. I'm not too sure on Drunken Angel, and I don't like any of the other new stuff.

Except they're covering up their own text with their logo. Ridiculous.FSimeoni wrote:Berlin Alexanderplatz is amazing, one of the best Criterion covers I've seen for a while.
I have to admit, at first I wasn't aware these were new announcements and I was going to upbraid people for posting fan covers in this thread. Oops.

Maybe what I'm thinking is what you guys have been refering to (I don't know what PD is), but this cover reminds me of something I'd see in a dollar store.Jeff wrote:That was my first thought too. PD = Public Domain. Or, in other words, something you'd see in a dollar store.eez28 wrote:Maybe what I'm thinking is what you guys have been refering to (I don't know what PD is), but this cover reminds me of something I'd see in a dollar store.Jeff wrote:That was my first thought too. Agreed on The Lady Vanishes: the train has a great look, and could be an iconic image for the cover like an old hand drawn movie poster, but the face is way out of place. Also the red sky vs. the blue logo is just ugly. Where are they getting this stuff?
The others look rather nice, love Sawdust and Tinsel's cover, and Drunken Angel's. Alexanderplatz is well designed and I like it, but that face is a bit ugly (which is fine by me); I think the sheer size of the box is going to get more people's attention than the off-putting art style.

They're going for the look of a cheapie paperback mystery. It's not sleek, but I think it's totally apt and very charming. Public domain artwork would never contain such an audacious color scheme or be so emphatic.eez28 wrote:Maybe what I'm thinking is what you guys have been refering to (I don't know what PD is), but this cover reminds me of something I'd see in a dollar store.Jeff wrote:That was my first thought too. Well, I hope his favorite design of his own (in a while) isn't the new Lady Vanishes...mogwai wrote:In his latest blog entry, Eric Skillman says he designed it himself.ianungstad wrote:Is that Berlin Alexanderplatz cover done by comic artist Danijel Zezejl? It looks a lot like his work. Very nice.

I like them all, including The Lady Vanishes, which just seems to vibrant and pulpy, except for Drunken Angel, which is *awful*. It says nothing about the film or its mood, its unattractive to a head shaking extreme. I could have seen it stylized in a way the recent Dassin's were. Hopefully it will change.mogwai wrote:In his latest blog entry, Eric Skillman says he designed it himself.ianungstad wrote:Is that Berlin Alexanderplatz cover done by comic artist Danijel Zezejl?
