Fantastic news, I've held off buying the previously available releases for what seems like an age sure that as soon as I took the plunge something better would come along.

Wait for specs because there are like 10 different United Artist titles MGM and Fox are repackaging to be released that day.

DVD Empire has this listed as part of something called the "Decades Collection." Sounds like a repackage, but I may be wrong.

Amazon's listing has this in color and pan and scan. Hopefully those are both inaccurate. If this is a repackage it would be mindboggling since the retail is $5 more than the current barebones edition.

"Color" and "Pan and scan" are part of Amazon's DVD template, as I recall and has caused confusions many times over the years. They really ought to get that shit fixed. I'd love to see an anamorphic 1.66:1 SE of this film.

The listing no longer calls it a special edition. Looks like just another Fox repackaging of an old MGM disc.

It's probably the single disc version from this package -

I don't think so, look at the price. This is perfect time for SE: anniversary + recent inclusion on AFI. I really hope this is a new release.

This is up on Fox's retail site. It's just a repackaging as part of some line called the "decades collection."

It just looks like a repackaging of the old disc to me, a real shame.

This movie's usual reception is so utterly staggering...I'm very surprised that MGM and co. aren't doing all out for a special edition. The original broadcast version (from 54) still exists, right? That would make for a fantastic supplement...

I don't know why they are using that image. I actually almost bought this at Wal*Mart a few weeks ago. It was the single disc with a Time Life CD sampler with music from films of the 1950s.

I'm still hoping this gets a clean-up. The current disc, although currently presented in 1.66:1, is non-anamorphic and the transfer is soft and from not-so-great elements. Just watched it again last night.

A new transfer would be an improvement, but still won't be anamorphic since MGM doesn't release 16 x 9 discs of 1.66:1 films, with the sole exception of the first three Bond films.

Things have changed since Fox took over: see 10:30 PM Summer, Iphigenia, et al, which are 1.66:1 anamorphic. That won't change things if it's the same old transfer for this one, of course, but still, there's hope.

Thank you, God. Maybe MGM will be able to find the original television broadcasted Twelve Angry Men? Any word on what form it exists? If it does?

Also.

It is a period of civil war.
Criterion Forum.org, striking from a hidden base,
have won their first victory against the evil DVD Empire.
During the battle, Rebel spies managed to steal secret plans to MGM's ultimate weapon, The 50th Anniversary Edition of 12 Angry Men,
an armored DVD with enough High definition power to destroy
an entire Syvania Plasma Flatscreen.

It looks like MGM is planning these UA special editions at a rate of about one a month:

January: IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT
February: THE APARTMENT
March: 12 ANGRY MEN

Wasn't there a press release mentioning an 18 month celebration of UA's 90th anniversary? They've mentioned that LAST TANGO and THOMAS CROWN are coming; should we expect 13 more in the coming months?
