When this was first announced, DVDEmpire was out of the two Quais, so that they got them back in stock means some distro is still fulfilling orders for these discs. Interesting.

It's only been a week. Is it possible that this new stock was actually ordered from a distributor before the change to OOP status? On a related note, Quai is "On Order" again already at DVDEmpire.

This may not be the best time to ask whether Manon, my favourite Clouzot, might ever get a Criterion release.

I got the two Quais from Amazon before the bumrush to get them was on, and they arrived pretty quickly. Then, when the scramble to buy lowered the price to $21, I was able to get them to credit my account the difference. I'm keeping my DVDPlanet order open just in case, but I was just happy to get them before the prices got outrageous.

Thought I'd let you folks know: Despite the message from Amazon regarding 1-3 weeks shipping on Quai, I decided to take my chances and place an order on Saturday. Yesterday (Tuesday) I received confirmation that my order had shipped. This doesn't guarantee that you'll have the same results, but . . .

When I ordered them late last week, they cost something like $27 each and were still in stock. Now they're around $21 and ship in a few weeks, if at all. If, like me, you ordered (and later received them) when you first heard about them going out of print, you can go to the Help section of the page, go to Pricing and Payment, and then hit the Contact Us button on the left side of the page. You'll want to go to the email tab, and select the order in question, and just nicely explain the situation and ask for the difference to be credited to you. They'll send you a nice email back in a day or two letting you know its been taken care of.

Naturally, the price on the one I ordered (Variety Lights) has gone back up. Figures.

Hi, my first post :D

So anyway, I just received confirmation from Amazon that (a), they shipped, and (b), they gave me a $5 refund since the price dropped on 'Port of Shadows' (the one I ordered). Thanks to the original poster for the heads-up.

By the way, I have a question... what's this of a 20% sale? Is that at DVDplanet or where? I can't seem to find any reference to it.

There's a website called deepdiscount.com that has a 20% off sale twice a year. Their prices are already pretty low, and they're even better when you get the sale discount. I save up a chunk of change waiting for each sale. I just got an email confirming all 4 of the OOP DVDs just shipped, so I'm pretty stoked.

And DVD Planet, which usually kicks DeepDiscount's ass (despite being owned by the same parent company). Both sales are going on now, see DVD Trades and Bargains section of the forum for details.

I'd like to think this group of OOP titles is going to get a lot more casual/collector folk interested in these blockbuster titles. Too bad I already parted with my spare copy of Quai just a month or two ago.

Thank you very much. I hadn't noticed the 'deals' topic before. I guess it pays to have a look around this forum. :D

I don't get it--shouldn't Amazon have been raising the price instead of lowering it if there was a rush to buy?

The 'deals' topic (among others) doesn't appear on the index unless you're logged in.

Everyone discounts top sellers. A rush to buy makes something more popular, thus making it a big seller, which in turn makes retailers discount further so they can move more units. Nobody jacks up prices on items going out of print, only items that don't sell well.

Mmm, I wonder if this whole thing was a joke to get us to buy these movies :-k

Even more insidious - because I figured I wouldn't be getting the one I ordered from DVDPlanet, I ordered it from Amazon.com. Looks like I'll have two copies of Variety Lights (thankfully I already had the other three.)

You'll be able to make a profit on these down the road (if you can wait at least a year), I'd stock up if you can manage.

Interesting. This is why I am not in business. Anyway, I can see how that makes sense for big sellers, but why with out of print titles? Demand exceeds supply (potentially).

Considering what I've been spending on all of the sales lately, that ain't gonna happen.

while we are talking about H-G Clouzot, I just would like to tell that next week in Paris, Le Louvre will open to public the very first projection/theatre of the rushes (only 15 minutes for the moment) of the elusive and unfinished Clouzot's last project movie with Romy Schneider L'enfer/Inferno (Chabrol released a movie later reworking the script with Marin Karmitz).

too bad that the gallery photo which were available here is not available anymore...

in some French newspaper there are some stunning color photo from these rushes, showing the fantasma scenes with Romy Schneider which are amazing... It looks like if Clouzot was going beyond Hitchcock's experimentation to create visual fantasmagora scenes... Sometimes, the use of color and special effects seems precursor to a lot of genre, such as Suspiria's Argento...

I really hope that this will be released one day as bonus on DVD. Could Criterion put his hands on this ????
