5 (!) commentaries? Umm, why exactly? I love Simon Pegg like the next guy but still...

It passes the time very nicely, though it's ridiculously overlong at two hours and was clearly partly intended as a wish-fulfilment project for its director and stars. (Let's face it, no-one else was ever going to cast Nick Frost as an all-guns-blazing action hero).

But the first half is very funny indeed, and comfortably up to the standard set by Shaun of the Dead.

The final act goes from parody to self-parody. All-in-all, I liked it, but a 3-disc special edition sounds like overkill.

Don't you love what Universal does to fans of a film. The HD release had all the extras right off the bat from the R2 release. Wal-Mart gets an "exclusive" extras disc that has everything from the R2 release and HD release, but is missing 3 commentary tracks, which now looks like on this 3 disc set that they have added one more to make it 5 tracks now for the film. People get mad because Wal-Mart doesn't get enough of the exclusive sets in widescreen so people break down and get the exclusive set in full screen which they had a ton of, then go out and get a copy of the widescreen single disc. This then makes people return or sell back the fullscreen single disc that they had to get to get the "exclusive" extras disc. Now only less than 4 weeks after the dvd came out, Universal says that in 3 months were going to put out a set that has all the extras that were missing off the first release that were supost to be a part of an "exclusive" disc you got at Wal-Mart or on HD, plus the missing commentary tracks, you really have to love how they work.

I think Universal and Paramount are probably the worst with DVD releases and this was expected. I went ahead and bought the Region 2 Hot Fuzz but I might eventually pick up this 3-disc so it'll play in all my DVD players.

Yea but at least Paramount was up front with people that Zodiac was going to get a 2 disc release next year right when the bare bones disc came out. Universal just wants to milk us the fans for everything that it's worth.

Easily one of my favorite movies of the year. It isn't often you see new film sub-genres created right in front of your eyes but that is what Wright/Pegg have done with their two films. As with Shaun, Hot Fuzz is best appreciated after the third or fourth viewing. The jokes are so densely packed that it demands repeat showings just to get an idea of how ambitious they were in the film's construction & execution.
All that said, I'm pretty happy with the R2. I would have to hear some amazing things about the new Edgar Wright & Guest commentary or the contents on the third disc.

Wasn't really upfront, they only officially announced it in a trailer on the disc itself. Sounds more like a "fuck you, sucker" to the people who purchased the single disc edition.

Liked the movie a lot but 5 commentaries is a bit overdoing it. Might get it anyway since I don`t own it yet.

I don't think anyone with any familiarity with British TV sketch show film pastiche will quite share your enthusiasm for this alleged burgeoning new form. It's a well worn path from the Pythons through the Young Ones, Glam metal Detectives, League of Gentlemen , Chris Morris' projects and countless countless other derivatives that have formed the backbone of 'alternative' TV comedy for well over 25 years and has indeed become the mainstream.

Absolutely - it's slicker than a film like The Supergrass (1985), but otherwise it's a perfect double bill partner.

Sub-genre I was referring are film parodies that also exist at the same time as worthwhile entries into the genre of films being made fun of. So I guess I don't see the connection to Python, League of Gentlemen or the Young Ones. In the case of League of Gentlemen, I'm aware of their love for the horror films of Amicus & Tigon, there is LoG commentary on one of the movies in the Anchor Bay R2 box set of Tigon movies worth tracking down, and how those film influence their comedy but I would not look at something like their Christmas special and say it exists in the same category as Dr. Terror's House of Horrors as I think it is too self-aware of the conventions. It's a clever & funny take on anthology horror but I don't think it could compete on its own as a anthology horror film. Chris Morris I'm not as familiar with. I am correct in saying Brass Eye is one of his?

Adding to that sucker punch was the fact that the audio commentary referenced a second commentary and documentary not found on this release. So yeah, they got me too.

That reminds me of my early days of buying DVD's when I bought the UK 2 disc "Collector's edition" of Disney's Tarzan and excitedly read a mention in the booklet of comments made by people in an audio commentary that was supposed to be included. However the commentary wasn't actually included! A shame that they left the reference in the booklet, but I suppose that is what happens when discs, extra features and booklets are being authored in totality and then get manipulated and changed when they are released in different regions.

Thought it would be Peter Jackson as the guest, but I was wrong.

I'm happy with the R2, so I won't get this one. But for whoever gets this
and listens to the new Audio Commentary, could you count how many
times you hear "a'right" said by QT?

I really hope they don't do what they did with Jarhead and shelve this immediately.

I'll be buying this ASAP just in case - I was under the impression that this release was created to appease Edgar Wright after Universal and Wal-Mart botched the bonus disc release the first time around. Best Buy has this for $25 this week (better than Amazon's price) so I don't have any reason to wait.

I'm assuming it's a digipak like the Jarhead SE?

Yes the standard edition was in a keep case, but they also released a two-disc digipack version which disappeared rather quickly from shelves (kind of like the Munich digipack - which if you didn't buy on release day you missed out on).

I might be wrong but I could've sworn most of this content is already available on the Hot Fuzz HD-DVD. Thanks to that commentary with Quentin Tarantino as a guest, my interest has just dropped a significant amount.

As far as I understand, everything is on the HD-DVD except for some of the commentaries (I was under the impression that the HD version still only had one) and the contents of the third disc. I'm dreading hearing QT's "heh heh" Beavis and Butthead cackle after every joke.
