No Country may end up being a little too oblique for the fuddy-duddies in the Academy, but a bevy of critics' awards may guilt them in to nominating it. Word on the street is that Atonement will be the Oscar favorite this year.

Oh god China, The Knot? What a terrible film. Even the cheese-loving Chinese girls that put it on turned it off after a half-hour. They need to get Zhang Yimou and Chen Kaige on a rotating cycle so we can have pretty disappointing melodramas instead of shoddy third-rate melodramas.

Or grow some balls and submit Jia Zhangke. Though I guess he needs to make a nice costume drama first.

Word on the street is that Atonement will be the Oscar favorite this year.

That's what I kept hearing at TIFF this year from anyone with an Industry pass. The frustrating thing was that every person seemed to qualify their statement by saying that it wasn't their favorite film. I guess they figured it was just the best Oscar bait they had watched.

I'm calling this right now: Persepolis will be nominated for Best Foreign Language Film, be the frontrunner, and then lose to The Counterfeiters.

I'd love to see 4-3-2 and Jar City get nominated, but I doubt either will happen.

I am really surprised that no one has mentioned Brad Pitt's film The Assassination of Jesse James or Michael Clayton as possible Oscar contenders. To this i would also add The Kite Runner perhaps even The Golden Compass, at least for Kidman's performance which many critics ar claiming is as good as her performance in to Die For.
This is going to be a really interesting year for the Oscars what with the strike and the current malaise regarding America's political and socil standing around the globe.
In terms of the foreign language films, I hope this is the uear that the Academy finally recognizes the quality and importance of films being produced in South Korea. Lee Chang-dong is an amazing director who in limited career so far has managed to make some really powerful and insightful films: Green Fish, Oasis, Peppermint Candy and now Secret Sunshine.

Warner's essential dumping of TAOJJBTCRF despite critical praise pretty much quashed the film's Oscar hopes. As for Michael Clayton, it's still got a fair shot and at least where I am, has been showing some very strong legs theatrically. Maybe not for Best Picture, but certainly there could be some acting noms.

I'm really just hoping Zodiac and Away From Her get some much deserved love.

I'm guessing because it's a Canadian film and ISA only recognizes American films.

There's Best Foreign Film (not "Foreign Language" as Once was nominated, so it could have been nominated here), and Lust, Caution managed to get three nominations. Maybe they just didn't like the film, but I'm genuinely surprised that no one involved was recognized. It seems like exactly the kind of film the ISA loves.

The main reason for this is that Paramount had no idea how to sell the film to audiences in the first place, and REALLY has no idea how to sell it to awards voters. They're really not very good at mounting awards campaigns, so Zodiac may be a darling of critic's awards but it won't get a single Oscar nomination.
