Pineapple Express (David Gordon Green, 2008)
David Gordon Green has hooked up with the Judd Apatow crew for his next film, and his first comedy. A stoner/action comedy. Here's an interview.
Seth Rogen is rumored to be trying to convince Huey Lewis to pen the theme song for the film.
The Pineapple Express logo is pretty cool. But yeah, not many huge yuks, but I loved the little bit about civil engineering.

Surprised about a new project already, since Green's Snow Angels has yet to see release...

Those are mainly the exact kind of people who will be excited. As they watch Superbad here will be the scene:Oedipax wrote:Ugh. From George Washington to... that. It feels like Grandma's Boy with slower cutting. Maybe one or two laughs in the whole clip, and that's being generous. And just think - that's what they chose to put on the DVD to get people excited!
Stoner 1: :puff, puff: Woah look at those buds, that bag is loaded! :cough, cough:
Stoner 2: Fo shizzle, man, I have gots to toke up right before I see this one. :puff, puff: DAMN, that is one nice J. Hey, lets roll one up just like that!
Stoner 1: Dude, already workin on it.
Stoner 2: sweet. Shit, that logo is crunk. I'm gonna stick that on the back on my ride. What else has this Green guy done? Did he do Half-Baked too?
Stoner 1: He must have since he has green in his name, you know he smokes up like all day.

Is that what I said? I guess I should have worded it better. I meant the people to get excited for Pineapple based on that scene will be the stoners who watch Superbad. Relax, it's ok to like Superbad. I do. I'm just not a stoner, and the Pineapple scene didn't really do anything for me.Antoine Doinel wrote:Right, because people who watch or enjoy Superbad are morons.

Wow. That scene felt like a painfully unfunny version of the same scene between Travolta and Eric Stoltz in Pulp Fiction. There's been a plethora of wannabe dope dealer/buyer scenes like that since 1994......just add this one to the pile I guess.
PS Seriously, I can't believe DAVID GORDON FUCKING GREEN made this. I died a little on the inside after watching that clip.

Right now this looks like it will appeal to no-one. Seriously unfunny dialogue, and way too slow to appeal to the usual Judd Apatow fanbase. If that clip is an accurate representation of the film, then this will be a complete disaster on all fronts.

Though to be fair, this film is supposed to be a bit of departure from 40 Year Old Virgin, Knocked Up and Superbad. Apparentally the overall tone of the film is closer in line with Lethal Weapon and those kinds of films. Which in the hands of the Apatow crew could be potentially awesome.Cde. wrote:Right now this looks like it will appeal to no-one. I'm getting the impression that this clip was probably chosen because (theoretically) it has the broadest appeal but it will be interesting to see how the first trailers take shape.

I'm not a massive fan of Apatow, and I guess I expected more from Gordon-Green. Still, some of the reports I've heard on this make it sound more promising; the action movie slant for instance. I really hope it turns out alright, but this clip doesn't do much to convince me.
Hmm, I wonder what Malick will think of this one?

Yeah, horrible dangers like your film making 10x more money than all of your previous films combined. Oh, Apatow! You evil fuck.domino harvey wrote:There should be a PSA starring Kasdan and Green, warning fellow young filmmakers about the dangers of falling in with the Apatow Crowd.
Seriously though, I am what some of the grandmothers who post here would call a "stoner," simply because I smoke marijuana often but I don't exactly have a subscription to "High Times." I thought the clip was pretty funny. I'm a huge DGG fan (and am also one of the moron burnouts who likes Knocked Up and Superbad), and obviously, this isn't George Washington, but I'm looking forward to what kind of departure this turns out to be.
