I'm not convinced that the climax was the right way to end this. Still, it's a very interesting move from a thematic standpoint. This is definitely the best Australian film we've seen made in a long, long time, and I'd love to see Saville develop his technique and make more films SOON. One of the biggest problems we have in Australian film is that it seems that after one of a director's projects has been financed, it takes many years before another work from this director can move ahead. We're seeing many first-time directors making films but we have very few filmmakers consistently releasing films (the only one I can recall now is Rolf de Heer). It seems that we're waiting for 'the next big thing' rather than letting the talent we have develop!

I was impressed by the film, but not so wildly as David. It seemed as much a very slick 'calling card' debut as an exciting original voice, but nevertheless it's great to see young filmmakers actually thinking about different structures for delivering suspense, or incorporating sound design into the very fabric of their films. I was also impressed that the filmmakers had the guts to stick the 'solution' to the mystery in plain sight (for us and the characters) about halfway through the film and trust that they could keep us interested enough in the non-mechanical side of the plot to stay with them right through to the end.

David, can you comment on whether or not the Aussie DVD is anamorphic? The listings I'm seeing say it is letterboxed.

Wonderful, thanks. I've been interested in seeing this for a while, and your initial post (along with the 16x9 confirmation) pushed me to order a copy.
