I received an e-mail from Cine-Tamaris a while back, saying Le Bonheur would be released by Criterion this year. I recently gave up and ordered this French edition, so if past experience is any indication it'll be coming from Criterion any day now (same thing happened with Pandora's Box and Two-Lane Blacktop). I also ordered this collection of Varda's short films. Both DVDs have English subs, good picture quality, and are packed with extras.

Thanks for the link - I have given up hope on Criterion putting this out...so I just wanted ANY decent copy.

What a terrible cover... why couldn't they have just used this theatrical poster.

And still no word r1 or r2 uk on The Wayward Cloud? I may just have to buckle down and get the r3.

Ken Loach's Looks and Smiles (1981) is now available. Picture quality looks great to me. Chris Menges' cinematography is excellent. A "Family Life"-like Loacher. List price: $20. But for 3 more days, at DDD, with the 20% off coupon "DD1109", you can have it for $11.

Does anybody have any info in regards to a possible region 1 release of Louis Feuillade's Fantomas?

I wouldn't hold my breath. Grab the AEye, a beautiful eng-subbed port of the Gaumont discs. Next thing you you'll have an R1 by Dave Shepard w totally replaced intertitles.

Bunuel - "Los Olivados"

Anyone know what the status is on this getting a US release? Criterion would be great.

Also, if Criterion has any plans for "Accatone"

the rights to Los Olvidados are still being sorted out, but Koch Lorber apparently owns DVD rights.

I just spoke with Koch Lorber, and the rights are currently in dispute between them and a Mexican company.

membrillo, if you don't already have a copy, go with either the Mexican Alter DVD or French CineClub (FsF?) DVD, which also comes with Las Hurdes (Tierra sin Pan). The dispute that Koch Lorber is in has been going on for two or three years, with no end in sight. Who knows when Los Olvidados will get a U.S. release?

Thanks to everyone and yes...

I know it is Los Olvidados... you'd never guess that Spanish is my first language... I just don't care for or didn't bother checking my spelling. Everyone knew what I meant anyways! Thanks again!

Auf der anderen Seite / The Edge of Heaven (Fatih Akin)

#117 Post by pro-bassoonist »

After Him (2007) is set to be released on April 4th. in France/Monaco. Part of the Directors' Fortnight Series at the Cannes Film Festival. I don't have the technical info at the moment.

Official site, Variety Review & Poster

The UK release of Tony Gatlif's Transylvania is set for February 18th. With Asia Argento and Birol Unel (Head-On).

Variety review & Poster

The latest from Fatih Akin (Gegen Die Wand a.k.a Head On) is set to be released on February 22 in Germany. The film titled simply Auf der anderen Seite a.k.a The Edge of Heaven will be introduced as a double DVD set. Unfortunately preliminary info indicates lack of English subs. Pic was winner of the Best Screenplay Award at the Cannes Film Festival in 2007.

The film is very slickly done, but I wasn't wildly impressed (not as good as Head-On, and that hasn't exactly stayed with me).

It's yet another of those multiple-intertwining-characters/storylines conceits that's relies way too much on coincidence, portentous irony and (I'm guessing) colour-coded flow diagrams. A few filmmakers can pull this kind of thing off without leaving their fingerprints all over the place (R.I.P. Edward Yang), but generally it drives me up the wall, especially when it looks like films from different continents have all been assembled from the same kitset.

When the film neatly deposits you at the Moments of Emotional Resonance, it doesn't feel like you've stumbled across genuine human feeling, more like this is the piece of cheese you get as a reward for being a good lab rat and following the filmmaker's neon-lit trail.

MichaelB, I seem to remember that you interviewed Tony Gatlif for an article in Sight and Sound a few months back. What did you make of Transylvania?

A mixed bag. Birol Ünel is fabulous, but Asia Argento's character annoyed me more or less from the start, and it doesn't really go anywhere much once the basic premise has been established.

As always with Gatlif, the music is sensational (much of it performed live on screen) and there's plenty to look at, but it didn't grab me to anything like the same extent as Exiles or Gadjo Dilo.

If you're new to Gatlif, I'd recommend those two first, as well as the extraordinary musical gypsy odyssey Latcho Drom. Forget Vengo, though, unless you're a total flamenco addict - and even then I'd only watch it for the musical numbers.

And possibly a better transfer coming soon in R2. Anyone know if Axiom is a quality distributor?

Les Chansons D'Amour

And one last post regarding Christoph Honore's (Ma Mere) latest Les Chansons D'Amour a.k.a Love Songs which is set to be released in the UK on April 14th courtesy of Artificial Eye. Nominated for Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival last year.

Les Chansons D'Amour / Love Songs is in the IFC pipeline as well, and I'm really looking forward to it! I will, however, be waiting for a local theatrical showing, or the dvd, because my local cable's OnDemand service doesn't broadcast IFC in HD.

Is there a history of head-to-head dvd comparisons between AE(R2) and IFC (R1)?

If you want to consider Weinstein's release of Coeurs which is via IFC then all I could say is that the print is identical to the one released by Artificial Eye. Yet, IFC have released some truly disappointing discs such as El Aura.

I personally am going to get the UK disc.

Yes. They are reliable mostly because when it comes to transfers they tend to borrow the best ones.

I'm hoping a review will also pop up of Axiom's Wayward Cloud disc. After all, it's my favorite movie.
