I just heard Schumann's Piano Quintet in E-Flat Major, Op. 44 at a chamber music concert. The second movement, "In modo d'una Marcia: Un poco largamente" has a funeral march sort of feel, and I know I've heard it in a film somewhere. I've done some searching and apparently it's in Michael Winterbottom's "A Cock and Bull Story" but that's not where I've heard it. Any ideas?

I don't think there's a single original piece in A Cock and Bull Story - or rather, every single piece of music that Winterbottom used is there for a specific purpose, usually to trigger memories of another film (8 1/2, The Draughtsman's Contract, Barry Lyndon).

So the entire soundtrack becomes a game of "where have I heard that piece?"!

This thread could go to hell in a handbasket fast if we start moving to programmers filled with library music.. not to mention silents.
